Hospitals give self-pay discounts to patients. Hospitals also give "prompt pay" discounts. (Pay us X dollars now, and we will consider it paid in full. Worthwhile for the hospital, because its better to give you a discount and get some payment now rather than pay the expense of sending you to collections later.)

$1,500 is your total ER bill. That sounds about average for a typical, low complexity ER visit. (Your bill is already around $500 just for walking in the door, and then more gets tacked on for each test, x-ray, etc.)

The hospital apparently offered you a deal where you could pay $100 and consider it done. A discount for a patient paying with cash promptly, which may also be based on your household income. Most hospitals have a sliding fee where low income people get a bigger discount.

However, if you don't follow through on your end of the payment arrangement, the hospital can revoke the discount they offered you. And then you'll end up owing the entire $1,500. Obviously, the hospital wouldn't allow you to keep that discount if you don't bother to pay them the amount you agreed to pay.

This is why I always advise people never to just ignore hospital bills - you might be able to get a discount on your total balance by working with the hospital. But if you don't cooperate with the hospital, they will bill you for the whole thing.

When you pay the $100, you should get a receipt from the hospital showing that the total bill was $1,500, you paid $100, and the hospital wrote off $1,400.

That's a pretty standard scenario - nothing at all unusual about the discount the hospital offered you.

You just have to decide whether you'd rather pay the $100 now and be done with it, or end up getting sent to collections for the entire $1,500. I know which option I would choose!

The 100 was probably a co-pay type of charge. The 1500 is you actual bill for the ER service. Call them and make arrangements most hospitals are willing to work with you and my greatly reduce the amount owed if you call and explain you situation.

Ask the hospital. $100 may have been an initial payment. Was it really an emergency? NEVER go to an E.R. if a primary car clinic will do. Hospital E.R.s are much more expensive.

If you had no insurance, the ER will ask for some type of deposit at the time services are rendered. The $100 requested was not an indication of what the final bill was going to be. In all honesty, that $100 probably did not even cover you being triaged by the nurse in the ER.

Contact the hospital and ask for financial assistance. Many offer charity care or fees based on your ability to pay.

~~If you did not sign anything stating stating you agreed to pay interest and penalties if payment of $100.00 within a week, then they can not legally charge you. Providing you didn't start sending a regular monthly payment of what you can afford, send it so they receive it by the same date ever month, and don't miss a payment. The can not send you to collections if you do this.~~

Okay something doesn't sound right...maybe that was just the first payment usually it costs more than just $100 just to go to the hospital! If you need an alternative that is affordable let me know I can help you! Good luck!

Go to the hospital in which you received the treatment pay them the 100 bucks and get somthing in writing saying you paid in full then you can sleep at night

Interest accrues, and a collection fee is imposed by the collection agency.
