I'm driving uninsured. We can't afford our vehicle insurance. Is it nuts to drive out of town?
Please settle an argument between my husband and I. We drive in our town back and forth to work, and I feel ok with that. I want to rent a car tonight because we have to go to an interview. It's about 2 hours away, down a highway strewn with police. I think it's crazy to try to drive in our vehicle, uninsured. He doesn't want to waste the money on a rental. It's a $5000 fine if we're caught - plus I'd likely lose my job (can't have a police record). How far would you drive uninsured? I don't even like driving in town - but we're a few months away from being able to afford insurance. Opinions please.

In California, it is illegal. I don't know about other states. I wouldn't do it!

You are being irresponsible and endangering others with your foolishness.

If you can't afford car insurance, ride a bike.

Right and wrong does not hinge on what you can afford. You are breaking the law.

Do not drive uninsured. End of story. If you get caught, not only do you get a huge fine, but you also end up getting a suspended license, and need to show proof of insurance to the state for the next 5-7 years. It is called an SR-22 filing, and it will stay on your record for years, and since the state will stay on you about maintaining insurance, you will HAVE to keep it, and end up paying an very large surcharge on your policy for the next 3-5 years. If you have an accident, you pay it all out of your pocket. Everything you've worked so hard to get-all of your assets are in jeopardy. Do you want to loose your house, your car, have your wages garnished for the rest of your life just because you made a stupid decision that you'll regret for the rest of your life? If that's the chance you want to take, then you deserve to pay all the penalties and then some. If I was hit by you driving uninsured, believe me that I would take you to the cleaners and own you for the rest of your life. Why would you be so careless just to save a few dollars per month, when you could potentially be paying millions of dollars for the rest of your life? Think about it. Think I'm kidding... take a look at some of the judgments paid out on auto accidents--$7 million for spinal injury. God help you if you kill someone in another vehicle, or maybe someone in your own vehicle.

SELL YOUR CAR IF YOU CANT AFFORD IT. Buy a bike.

Oh Boy!
It's crazy to drive your vehicle, period.

I hope you get caught.

YOU are not going to be able to rent ANY Vehicle if you do NOT pay for the INSURANCE -- or have PROOF of Insurance -- period! NO rental company will rent to an UNINSURED Motorist at ANY Time --

As far as in town -- EACH state has different rules (and FINES -- yes -- FINES) for motorists that are stopped, ticketed for a traffic offense -- and do NOT produce a CURRENT Insurance Identification Information -- and this can amount to HUNDREDS of Dollars of ADDITIONAL FINES -- which you will have to PAY with the Ticket Fine otherwise you will NOT have your license restored.

No car rental place will rent to you, if you don't have insurance.

One car wreck, and you'll be paying thousands and thousands, to someone else. Have you read all the messages from people who damage someone else's car, and only have $5,000 of coverage? Or who don't have any coverage at all? Your wages WILL be garnished. If you think things are tough now, just wait until you have garnished wages!!

Don't leave town. Get a bus pass.

Do not drive uninsured. You can get cheap insurfance online at esurance.com and print out proof of insurance tonight right from home, and actually have auto insurance.

How can you afford not to have auto insurance? You can totally destroy someone, a family, or even yourself financially. You are being totally selfish if you continue to drie without car insurance. That is why the penalty is so much for uninsured motorist. I posted an article that affected one of my employees below.

Q.S.G
I wouldn't risk driving uninsured, period.
In my opinion, anyone who drives uninsured is nuts and deserves to get caught. Think about it..That couple hundred dollars or so every month is a lot cheaper than getting sued for an accident.

And by the way, it's because of people like you, people like me have to pay higher rates...And I have an impeccable driving record.

Get insurance..Or get off the road.

Hadley
Don't so it. You know it's going to cost you either way.

Don't risk your job, license, income and everything else.

Try to check out some auto insurance quotes and see if you can put it on your credit card???

I recommend InsureMe – They give you the five best auto insurance quotes from top-rated auto insurers nationwide. To request a free, no obligation quote, Go to http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=613596&Type=auto

I hope that helps! Take care and best of luck with your auto insurance!

Dont drive. The reason insurance premiums are so high are because of people like you on the road. Start taking a bus until you can afford to pay your insurance.

Get the Rental. My car was totaled out my an uninsured driver. It better to get the rental than to hit someone in an accident and get sued for what their insurance doesn't pay. In some states, if you get stopped and you are uninsured they will tow your car until you have proof of insurance. Also, maybe you should consider getting another vehicle if you can't afford the insurance to drive it.

Loollea
you'd really be better off renting the car and purchasing their insurance for your out of town trip
but you need to figure out someway to at least buy liability insurance for your vehicle (do without something) this is
just too much of a gambel nowadays

You people are so one sided and quick to judge. It is insane to make it a law to have insurance without some goverment program to help pay for it. Some of us live in cities where there is NO Public transportation and way to far to ride a bike or walk to work. So what are people to do, quit there job and lose everything. How are these people suppost to survive? What if you were in that situtation, what would you do? Tell your family were going to homeless and hungry because I can't afford auto insurance. No, you would drive and take that chance just like others have to do everyday. Try putting yourself in others shoes and stop judging people, who are you to judge?
