Here are some very well known carriers:
UnitedHealth
Cigna
Blue Cross/Blue Shield (website is bcbstx.com)

All of these are national carriers.

I have personal experience with Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Texas...I worked for them for 2 years...they are a good company

I would recommend United Healthcare. They do not place the same restrictions on you, nor do they "step down" your coverage, like the other companies do if you leave your home state or home city.

My husband lives in CA and I live in NV and we travel to TX and this was the best choice for us since we travel back and forth and knowing we have insurance everywhere in between is nice piece of mind.

blue cross/blue shield has 'branches' in pretty much every state and has coverage nationwide.
they have plans for about anyone.
i would recommend you call 2 or 3 insurance brokers in your area, and tell them what you want coverage for (ie: family emergencies, routine well-health visits, prescriptions, maternity, etc) take notes at each broker, compare coverage offered and the costs. some will offer real cheap coverage, but you would be very limited in which dr's you could see and what you can decide on your own. other coverage may not pay a cent until you pay $2000+ but will allow you to see almost any dr without referrals and going through the buracracy. insurance is really only for peace of mind. if you have a massive claim, it is very likely that you will either see 1) a horrendous premium increase or 2) be dropped and declared not insurable for a period of time.

we are going through insurance pains right now. I have family coverage for about $7000 per year plus deductible and out of pocket expenses and copays on top of that. Needless to say, that is way more than i can actually afford to pay. i am looking at a high deductible health plan and a health savings account. the premiums would still be about $2500 per year, and i would be responsible for the 1st $5000, but after that i would have 100% coverage. the health savings account would also allow me to deposit money into it (up to $5000) and pay all of my medical related bills from there (everything from Dr visits to prescriptions to over the counter medications and bandages) and next year i will be able to deduct the amount i deposited into the HSA from my taxes above the line, which could be a real savings! also, the HSA rolls over from year to year, would be in my name, and when i turn 65 i can access it and spend it on anything without penalty (if i spend it on anything other than IRS approved medical expenses before i turn 65 there is a 10% penalty fee)

good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
