Mrs.W
I'm looking into health insurance, but don't understand a thing? ?
Hi, me and hubby have been married for a few years now, and we're both healthy people. All I do is visit my Gyno once a year for my annual checkup, and pay $50 bucks a month for my birth control, not a big deal. Anyways, I want to eventually get pregnant, and I'm worried that one of us will get seriously hurt eventually, and where we live in OH, a few people I know have been denied access to the local ERs due to having no health insurance, and they about died trying to make it to a ER that will accept people with no insurance! (weird huh, can they do that? Sounds like a lawsuit to me!) Hubby is self-employed. We're really looking to not have to pay a lot every month for a bill that we're not using that often. So, can anyone explain deductibles, and all that insurance stuff?

My look on it is: if the plan is 125.15 a month, with a 5,000 annual deductible, we have to pay 5,000 a year before the insurance kicks in right? AND pay the 125.15 a month? So, for a healthy couple who hasn't needed a doctor or hospital in years, is that a waste of money? For the money that we save every month for not going, we could just be using it towards any medical bills?

Please help, I want to understand more. Thanks in advance.
And if anyone knows of any cheap plans, please say.
Additional Details
OK, I need someone to explain the high deductible. Say my deductible is 10,000. Say tomorrow I trip down my stairs and break my arm. So, how does this all work? I have to pay for my broken arm out of pocket since my deductible is so high and isn't met? And then if that's my only accident, next year I have a fresh 10,000 deductible? I know, accidents happen that's why they're called accidents and I can see insurance helping a lot if your bills are racked up into the thousands. But, I just IDK! What to do!

And isn't it true that maternity insurance, after the first year of having it, it only covers about 1,500? And if you have it for more than 5 years, it'll cover it all? How is that fair? If it's 500 a month and in 5 years when I might have a baby that's 30,000 I could've saved?

Please someone just explain lol.

Your right when you say 5,000 deductible your responsible for before the insurance kicks in plus your 125.15 a month. You say you and your husband are relatively healthy but if you do get pregnant wouldn't you want the best possible health care? Search all the Insurance companies in your area and see if you can find a better alternative to the health insurance company that gave you that quote. If you or your husband ever really needs medical service you better have a lot of money put away just in case or else you can be paying that bill off for the rest of your life plus interest to the hospital you go to. P.S. try to get Medical Insurance that has Prescriptions, Vision and possible Dental all included. You just have to search and ask different companies in your area what plans they have and what is covered.

Contact a local independent agent in your area. He will be able to help you understand different policies and find the one that suits your needs and financial concerns. Maternity riders usually have a 10-12 month waiting period before they cover anything related,so if you are wanting that coverage, you need to get it now.

As far as the premiums being wasted, that's why it's called insurance. If you or your husband get seriously injured or ill, any money you would have saved by not having the insurance premium payment would be spent the first day in intensive care.

First of all I'm certainly glad you're asking, BUT your logic is way off and you need the education before you find out the hard way.

Where do I begin...

1) Should I tell you about the 'healthy' 20-something that got hit by a drunk driver that racked up $250,000 of medical bills? Drunk drivers don't care if you have diabetes or not...

2) Or, should I tell you about the guy that decided he'd save a couple dollars going without insurance for a couple months (in between jobs), had a heart attack during that time, and then had to sell his home to pay the medical bills...

3) Or, should I tell you about the guy that just yesterday on Yahoo Answers thought that an insurance company would be interested in paying for his kidney stone operation. That was absurd..."I just applied for insurance and I have to go to the hospital, will the insurance pay for my bills before the plan gets approved?...." As if...

4) Or, should I tell you about my...and I'm healthy...snowboarding accident that took all of 30 seconds to happen but ran up $10,000 in bills. But, between my health insurance and disability insurance I actually netted a profit of ~$1,000. Regardless I won't be snowboarding again.

or finally...

5) I could tell you about the guy who paints my house. He fell and busted his head, ran up $100s of thousands in medical bills AND couldn't work for a year or so. Oh, and he had health insurance and a disability policy that paid all the bills and he's back to work now. All's well...

Anway, you can be smart and have insurance or you can choose to find out why you need it the hard way.

If you're 'healthy' (which is the only way to buy it, because if you weren't healthy the insurance company wouldn't want to insure you) just go for a high deductible. You'll get ALL the network discounts and if you do an HSA and make a contribution to it then the tax savings alone could cover the cost of the plan.

Bottom line...find a broker to help you and get insurance. Insurance is designed to cover the unexpected, so if you expected to need it you couldn't get it.

Here's the problem...if you wait to buy health insurance until you "need" it, no one will sell you a policy.

If you get pregnant (accidents happen) while uninsured, you will not be able to buy a health insurance policy. Unless you can get on Medicaid, you'll pay for all the prenatal care and delivery expenses out of pocket.

If you get injured and need surgery, no one will sell you a policy.

If you develop a serious medical condition, no one will sell you a policy.

I guess it depends on what risks you're willing to take financially and with your health. As long as you're fully informed and know that intentionally going without insurance while healthy often means that you can't get coverage when you finally need it, then that's a choice you can make. (not the choice I personally would make, but that's another story...)

P.S. Re: your friends in the ER. I'd be very surprised if they weren't leaving some details out or exaggerating the situation to you. I work for a large hospital system in Ohio, and there are pretty limited circumstances under which a critically ill/injured person could be turned away. If a person is to the point where they are "about to die," then they generally wouldn't even go through registration...they'd be taken straight to a treatment room, and someone would get their insurance info later. I'll find the law for ER services in Ohio and link it for you, so that your friends can be aware.

P.S. again...$125 a month is a cheap plan for family coverage.
