There are many approaches used by successful sales people. They generally have a script that is designed for the particular type of insurance that you are prospecting for and the demographics of the prospect. If you don't have scripts, then trial and error will get you where you want to go if you have tenacity. Most insurance telemarketers burn out in short order. The decline rate is very high.
If you are new to sales, read some good books on selling. It will pay huge dividends in the long run. |

Try to respect the other persons time be direct and confidant and don't let the no's bother you. With every no you are one step closer to a sale.
Lead Companies are also a great way to prequalify your clients, something like Mostchoice, who I have used before. |

I have been selling for a few years and started from scratch, meaning I had no experience in sales whatsoever.
The rule of thumb is if someone has already done it and it works then why reinvent the wheel. See if you can get a sales person from a competing insurance company try to sale you insurance and record the message. Large companies have scripts already written for that and it has been revised and researched and proven to work the best since they have years of experience.
The trick is, once you acquire the customer interest, what should you do from there... this is where a good spiced up sales experience comes in. But you will learn that from experience.
The more you do it the better you will get at it.
Selling insurance is probably one of the toughest things to sell, especially life insurance. That's why the commissions are so high. |

The best advice anyone could ever give you is: Find someone that's insurance business and get them to train you. You don't just wake up one morning and decide to sell insurance. If you have obtained the license you had to learn some of the basics about insurance. Now you need to transition to a selling mode. You need training for this. If that means going to work with an agent for a few weeks with no pay. That's what you need to do. Most agents are too busy to spend time training another agent unless they have a vested interest in that agent's success. That's why most agents go into the business working for and being trained by someone. If you were the kind of person that could start in the insurance business from scratch you would not be asking this question. A person that is so self-motivated they can start in the insurance business with no training or help from a successful agent would have just picked up the phone and started calling people until they found words that work. There is one other option for you. Find a reputable lead company if there is such a thing and spend some money. They do all the talking to get you in the door. You just have to walk through it and make the sell. Remember, listen to the client and what they want. Do not try to force a plan down their throat because that plan pays you better. You will have a much more successful career if you "help people". You can "sell people" and make a little money. You can "help people" and make a lot of money. |
