daorangejello | I am exploring the idea of becoming an adjuster. I am not really looking for a 9 to 5 job.? |
I would be interested in doing cat work, but when the catastrophe is over, just go home and do local work for the rest of the time.
As far as I can tell a Texas all lines license is preferable .
I live in north east Texas.
I need a game plan as for what to do first.
Do I need to get license before I talk to companies ?
What ,in your opinion are the best companies to look at. Considering my location.
I would like to stay flexible ,if possible and work for different companies.
Thanks for any input. |

Adjuster is not 9-5, it is flexible. Cat people are hard for a company to hire because we know the next cat they are off and running to that. Try one of the temp agencies (Insurance Overload is one). That may fill in the blanks till the next cat. These people fill vacancies for vacation, temp jobs, and even temp to hire. The license is good, that way they have no reason to wait. If you are tired of working temp or cat, but still want to work for various companies, try an independent adjustser such as Frontier, Crawford, GAB, Custard, Cunninghham (or whatever they are called this week). They handle multiple different companys claims, and different kinds of losses. |

There is no other job in the insurance industry with a higher turn over rate. While your work is extremely important your work load is usually through the roof and the burn out rate is high. You will never become rich being an adjuster. You'll probably lose your mind first. |

I've been an adjuster for a little over 13 years. I've worked as both and independent and as a staff adjuster. In fact, I am currently a staff litigation adjuster with a major insurer.
As an adjuster, you can expect lots of work and a never ending feeling that you're behind. That's just part and parcel of being an adjuster. Claims don't stop - not for weekends or holidays. However, your management and the company's culture dictate how you'll hold up under the stress. The company I currently work for does an excellent job of mitigating the stress factor.
I would recommend you getting licensed in Texas. It is widely reciprocated - meaning you can get licensed in other states without having to take additional tests. If you are going to be an independent, you'll want to get a license for as many states as you can to enhance your chances for work.
Unfortunately, getting licensed is only the first step as an independent. You'll also need to get certified to work for many of the top insurers. This means more testing. I would check out www.catadjuster.org; www.www.nacatadj.org; or www.pilotcat.com for more information regarding certifications.
I worked for Pilot Catastrophe Services. They are the largest provider of independent adjusters for Allstate. The money was excellent - they pay quickly - but the work environment left something to be desired.
Good luck! |

I used to work in the Corporate office of Frontier Adjusters, Inc. They have over 800 franchises in the United States. They have many franchises in Texas. Call the corporate office and ask them what the nearest office is to you and then get there number. If you are interested in buying a franchise, let them know and they can direct you to the correct person. There number to the corporate office is (602) 264-1061 - Dial 0 for the operator. Its in Phoenix, Arizona. Email me if you have any more questions.
BTW- I know you want to break into the business, I think the best idea would be to talk to an owner of the franchise that they refer you to. |
