To get the best deal, contact a broker. A broker works with several companies and can identify the best company, rates, and coverage for you. To find a broker in your area, log on to a website like http://www.homeownerswiz.com and fill out a form requesting a free quote. Good luck!

State Farm, that's what I have currently, it's not too bad. I will probably be switching to USAA though.

If those are the only two options, then I would go with State Farm. Why? Because with Geico you don't have an agent. If you have a claim and you don't agree with the way the company handles that claim, who are you going to call. The gecko is a company man and Yahoo Answers can't represent you! Your agent can go to bat for you.

Better yet, call an independent agent. They have several companies to shop with and many times can get better coverage for a lower premium.

I might be partial since I work for the same company I have ALL my insurance with, so I won't suggest them.

If it were me, I would go with a company that has a contracted agent, not an independent agent. Many of the companies that independent agents represent are small companies with claim handling practices that aren't conducive to keeping people as customers. Remember...I said many...not all....I don't want the independents bangin' on my door. Just because the independents can shop around and find you the best rate doesn't mean the company will treat you right when you file a caim. Trust me, service should be a major factor when choosing a company....even if it costs a little more.

I deal with companies like State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, AIG, Geico, and Progressive all the time, and out of all these I would have to say State Farm is the best company to deal with...besides my company, of course. All the other companies will treat YOU, their customer, well, but when it comes to other people.....they could care less....and I don't think that's ethical.

Just stay away from Allstate, NO MATTER WHAT!

Even insurance has the three basics of retail. PRICE, SERVICE, SELECTION. Figure out which two are the most important to you then pick the company that does those best. (Example Price:Walmart cheap crap, Service/Selection:Nordstrom)

No company, i repeat NO company can do all 3 well and stay in business, no matter what their ad says.

I know several others have said independent agent, not bad but not good either. Remember they are a sales person who works on a commission. They are not Fiduciary to you, in fact in the insurance business no one is Fiduciary to you, so buyer be ware.

Just a piece of general advice It is "usually" better to go with the same company as your car insurance and keep the same "agent" for many years. Your pricing gets better and the agent will work more for you as the years go on to keep your account.

I have had the same Allstate agent for 21 years. At first they didn't have the best price but for the last 15 years no one has been able to beat them for my car/home insurance price. I went there for the service and they have gone to bat for me several times, to me worth the initial extra cost. (not suggesting Allstate just an example)

Not all insurance companies are equal.
So are known to be less expensive, some are known for their great service when you need to file a claim, some make it very difficult to be satisfied making a claim.

Go to an independant insurance agent, and ask his opinion on company differences.

Whatever you get, Buy Replacement cost insurance.

Well, I'd recommend using an agent. Geico, you are your own agent - the professional advice you'd give yourself will probably land you in hot water, come claim time. So between those two, you're better off with State Farm.

Now, my homeowners is with State Farm . . but why in the world are you limiting yourself to just those two companies? You should see an independent agent, and find out what OTHER options you have.

It might be cheaper if you have insurance with the same company. You have car insurance with Geico, so they might give you discount on home insurance. However, it does not hurt if you do some online insurance shopping. Get quotes and compare with whatever Geico or State Farm has to offer.

I recommend an independent agent that handles several companies at once. Since variety is accessable, and that agent knows which one is best, put trust into the independent. They can also combine auto and home to allow top discounts to help you save more. Ask the agent about the companies' "BEST" rating. If it is an A-, A+, or A++, then know you have a great company backing you in the event of a claim. Good Luck.

All I have to say is State Farm sucks. Don't go with State Farm. You'll be sorry if you need them.
