cassnate | I am married and living out of my parents' state, can I still be under their auto insurance policy? |
The car is registered in their (my parents) name with me as the main driver, but our agent is telling us that I should get my own separate insurance. Do I need to do this, or can I still be covered through their policy that I am on now? |

Your parents need to change the car title to your name, if they haven't already. If they are not on the title, they are not legally liable for the vehicle, and if a claim would occur, the insurance company could deny the claim due to them not being legally liable. In addition to that, you have withheld information about a material fact which is the garaging address of the vehicle (in a different state) and the driver information (I imagine your spouse is not listed on the policy either.)
If the company finds out all of this information (which they will in time) they will probably send out a cancellation or non renewal on your parents policy due to the fact that the vehicle is not in the state in which it is registered and insured, and due to the fact that you are married now and they would want your wife's information, along with any other household members information.
You should definitely tell your parents to take the title and get it switched into your name, and get your own policy.
Also, if your parents are still on the title, they will remain legally liable for the vehicle and if an accident occurs, they can be sued. If you are married, why would you want them to remain legally liable for you? Get them to switch the title soon! |

I believe you have to be insured in the state you are living in full time, UNLESS you are in the military. Then you can be insured in your state of residency. |

Nope...I think that could be considered fraud? |

Your parents should transfer the car title to you, and you should get your own insurance on it. Show them this :) |

You need to get your own insurance, bud. It makes no sense for you to be covered under their policy. You're a big boy now. You're married and on your own. Be a man and take responsibility for your own insurance. |

Well, you are a listed driver. The car is theirs. Likely, you're going to have issues when you try to renew the plates on that car.
The coverage for a named insured is much more broad than a "listed driver". For example, as a listed driver, their policy will NOT carry over to cover you in any car you drive - like maybe your wife's. That would really stink, if you hit someone and got sued - with no coverage.
I can't believe your wife isn't having a cow. Part of growing up and getting married and having your own household, is having your own car and your own insurance.
It's time. Get your own car, get your own insurance. So at least you won't get tickets for not having the right tags on the car in a different state. |
