I am pregnant and my insurance got terminated...?
I am 40 weeks pregnant and should be having my baby any day now. I am 21 and had insurance under my parents because I was full time college student. I have taken the semester off to prepare and give birth to my son. But because I am no longer in school the insurance company terminated my insurance 2 weeks ago. What can I do?

I would try to apply for state/public insurance.
Nowadays, more people are eligible due to raises in the poverty level guidelines. And you don't need to be on Public assistance to do so, either!

Please call or go see them asap. Try 411 or even 211.

Good luck to you and your baby!

?
****, you're in trouble

It surprises me that neither you nor your parents considered the fact that you would lose health insurance when you decided to leave school. I hope that you put more thought into future decisions that could affect the wellbeing of your child - its part of being a parent.

As far as your insurance goes...apply for Medicaid or take COBRA continuation coverage through your parents employer (if offered). Or, pay for the birth out of pocket.

Those are really your only options - you won't get back on your parent's policy, if you aren't presently a full time student.

Retrospectively I guess I would have said "Induce labor 2 and a half weeks ago"
If you are independent I guess you can file forms for public assistance.
Public assistance really likes mothers.
So go down to the SS office early in the morning, say something like "My insurance got canceled 2 weeks ago. *point to stomach* Halp."
And explain in detail if necessary.
Note, they will require a lot of documents.

If you go into labor, hospitals usually have SS documents in the emergency room.

You may be eligible for COBRA if your parents employer had more than 20 fulltime employees. It will be expensive since you will be responsible for the entire premium-the employer will no longer have to pay what it was paying for you.

You might also qualify for medicaid, but if you live with your parents, their income will be counted.

Your other option is to pay a cash discounted rate for your delivery. Most hospitals and OB's offer them.

In the short term sign up for COBRA. Your parents company will provide the forms. This will give you retroactive coverage. Everything will be the same except the price you pay (102%, normally the employer pays a portion of insurance cost but under COBRA you will pay the entire cost plus a 2% administration fee). Your co pays, deductible, etc will remain the same.

When you go back to school, your parents should be able to pick you up again. Note, the baby will not be covered under your parents insurance so you will need to look into getting coverage for him.

Apply for welfare health insurance - medicaid - TODAY. IF you qualify, they'll cover you effective the application date.

Or just give birth at home - like most of the women in the world do.

Congratulations dear,

Well it is not all bad news since you have probably had continuous health insurance for 18 months or longer. Having continuous coverage with no longer than a 63 day break puts you in a special category whereby insurance companies are required by law (HIPAA) to offer you coverage on a guarantee basis. (They cannot refuse you coverage).

The wisest course of action for you would be to look for the individual coverage plan that best meets your needs and apply for it. (Make sure it offers maternity benefits). But while you are waiting for that to process please go ahead and get whatever your state offers to pregnant moms. There usually is a program or two that make sure that our children are not left out (That is one of the reasons you and I pay taxes).

The state maternity insurance may not offer you as many options as you may need but it is much better than having no coverage.

Congratulations again and I wish you and your baby the best.
