Mel K | I am renovating my house, do I need special insurance for the workers if they get injured? |
I am sure some of the workers do not have their own insurance. |

Very good question. Many people are not aware of the need for insurance coverage and just allow work to be done on and around their property without knowing the risks. The bottom line is that insurance is necessary unless you are willing to personally take responsibility for any accidents and/or injuries which occur. However, the best thing to do, strictly from the insurance aspect, is to be sure to ask the contractor to give you proof of his insurance. I only hire contractors who can give me a document showing current coverage is in effect. Despite the basic rule, we need to use some common sense. If we hire someone to rake our property of leaves, there is little risk of injury. If we hire them to clean the gutters on our home, the risk of a fall and subsequent injury increases dramatically. Whenever possible, get your spouse to do the handyman chores because they can't sue you!! Good luck. |

Instead of hiring a bunch of Mexicans from in front of Home Depot... hire a reputable contractor who will HAVE his own insurance. |

Save your self headaches and hire only companies with workers comp insurance. Yes, you will need special insurance.
When you hire unlicensed, uninsured people to work on your house you are completely responsible for them like employees. If they get hurt, they could own your house. |

Well, then YOU are on the hook for their workers compensation benefits - medical payments and lost wages.
To be safe, do not allow ANY workers on your premises, unless they have given you a certificate of insurance showing THEY have workers comp. |

Ask for certificates of insurance with current dates from each of the contractors. If they cannot provide them, then they cannot work. As for the Liability certificates, ask that you be listed as additionally insured. That way if any of THEIR employees do something which may lead to a claim, then you can pass the buck to them and have their insurance pay for it.
If you are being very generous and want to hire people who cannot get their own coverage, then you can get an Owner Controlled Insurance Policy. "OCIP" or "Wrap" policy. It's not cheap, but it does have a function for including uninsured workers. Any insurance carrier who is familiar with contractor coverage can usually be of assistance.
But...bottom line...you get what you pay for. If you are trying to cut corners by not hiring insured contractors, then it may come back to bite you later. |

Yes, you must have for officially nezaregestrirovannykh workers insurance and you are fully responsible for them at the offensive of accident.
But I as well as would advise other will appeal to the company which provides official employment of workers and provides their insurance policies.
One of companies, which is engaged in this is our partner. |

ALl workers mst have either workman comp or sign waiver not holding you responsible, if they dont do not, i repeat do NOT let them work on house or your property.....very dangerous liability for you......
In order to work as contractor and be legitimate they must follow above rules.....no insurance no hire no work...you could get sued if they claim to be hurt or get hurt and lose everything....ask for copies of insurance and work comp insur and /or waivers and also business license.... |
