I am so angry! Why did the insurance company decline my baby?
First off, I can't tell you how absolutely livid I am with the health care system in this country!! I am so disappointed in the US right now! But that's a whole other topic..

I applied for insurance coverage for my family. My husband was approved almost immediately. I am still waiting to find out if I will be approved, but my daughter has been declined! She is a perfectly healthy 8 week old baby. The only thing I can think of is the fact that she has acid reflux right now which is SO common in infants. It's like saying she has gas for crying out loud. What is the deal?? I am so pissed off right now I can't see straight.

I did ask why. They said that they couldn't discuss it over the phone and that I have to wait 7-10 days for a letter.

The reflux may be more of an issue than you might think, actually. Some infants with bad reflux end up having to use expensive formula paid for by their medical insurance. If an applicant is viewed as having a higher statistical risk of costing the insurance company a lot of money, they will be denied coverage.

Other possibilities...was your daughter full term, or born early? Was she born at a normal weight, or did she have low birth weight? (These are all things that might contribute to making an infant be considered "risky" to insure.)

Once you receive the letter, you can try appealing the underwriting decision by providing other medical documentation. However, you may find that you need to look at other insurance companies. (I know that you don't want to search for another carrier, but it may be your only option if this one doesn't choose to insure her. Unless you're applying for a high-risk policy that is required to take all applicants in exchange for a much higher premium, no insurance company has to sell a policy to anyone. They have the right to decline applicants who don't meet their underwriting requirements.)

Good luck.

That is totally crazy. Best to apply for an appeal while looking for a new insurance carrier.

I would like to suggest to try to get as much information as you could before making up your mind, here http://www.healthinsurance-onlinetips.info is a very resourceful
one.

Did you ask why? That should be your first step. Some insurers won't accept infants under a certain age.

Ask your agent; that's what they're for. If you are acting as your own agent (which is silly because the agent doesn't charge you any extra) you'll have to wait for the letter.

Depending on the company there can be a wait for newborns of 30 to 90 days. The acid reflux may or may not be the reason; that again will depend on the insurance company and the severity of the condition.

If you don't have an agent find one that works with all the major companies in your area before you try to find another policy. The agent can contact the insurance company before you apply to see if they'll decline or accept. As I mentioned, there is no extra charge using an agent.

It's probably the acid reflux. In newborns, it can be a misdiagnosis, or a symptom of something much more serious.

You'll have to wait for that letter.

You also might want to consider trying to use an agent, who might be able to find you alternative solutions, or another company.

That absolutely does not make sense. There are very few babies who don't suffer from reflux. The only thing I can think of is that there is a minimum age but I don't know why you could not have been told that over the phone - it's not like it's confidential information or anything like that. I would be really interested to know the reason when you find out.
