The most comprehensive listing of local attorneys can be found at www.martindale.com. Martindale-Hubbel is the best-known nationwide directory of lawyers. You can search for lawyers in your city or county who practice "Consumer law." Martindale rates lawyers according to their competence and ethics. An "AV" rated lawyer is the best, earning the highest marks for ability and ethics.
However, your claim is most likely not going to involve enough money to make hiring a top notch lawyer worthwhile. An "AV" rated lawyer probably charges $300-$500 per hour, and even if he or she could handle your case in a couple of hours, it would still be expensive. An alternative is small claims court, where people go to settle disputes without lawyers. You can go and present your side to the magistrate judge in a very informal setting, and the magistrate judge will decide the controversy for you.
Alternatively, if you feel you are unable to handle the case by yourself, you should contact your local Legal Aid office. Legal Aid attorneys are paid by the government and private donors to represent poor people at no charge. They may be able to represent you, or at least help you represent yourself.
Good luck! |

Call the local Bar Association office in the town in which you live and ask for their referral service.
Check the yellow pages, usually attorneys are listed by speciality; you would need debt collection atty
good luck |

If the amount of money is under $5000 you might want to consider small claims court. Otherwise it's hard to define what a good lawyer is. Though unfair it could be economy vs. results, but you don't want to pay an attorney $20,000 to recover $10,000. |

I know a couple good ones. Are you Eastern or Western PA??
You'll have to pay them up front, you know - probably a retainer of $1,000 would do it.
Most of the time, if you REALLY don't owe the debt, you can get them off your back on your own. But if you DO owe the money, then you're going to lose anyway. |
