I bought auto insurance from another company, do I have to call the old company and tell them?
I got tired of State Farm and switched over to Esurance. I have already paid for a 6 month policy, which started the same day my State farm policy ended. Do I have to call State farm and tell them anything, or will they automatically close my account?

No, you do not have to inform State Farm. As you stated you started the Esurance policy on the day your State Farm policy expired. Unless you are on EFT for premium to SF then your SF policy will simply non-renew. Not a mark on your record. Esurance will notify state of your new coverage if that is required.
Just make sure you have adequate coverage, not just state minimums, no med pay, and no underinsured motorist coverage.

taketwo
it's a good policy that you do

kittyrogers
Of COURSE you have to call State Farm! They need to know you no longer want insurance through them. If you don't call, you will continue to be billed the premiums. Your new insurance company IS NOT going to do this for you, however they should give you a form for doing this. Call!

You want to call them and let them know the date that you started with esurance. Otherwise, they'll report you for having "lapsed" insurance, which will make your rates go up. They will not automatically close your account, they will show you as a no pay.

Mrs T
unless you want to pay for 2 policies, yes, you have to call. the good news is that you will probably get a refund for the remainder of your old policy.

prcsdime
Yes, you need to let them know by calling or mailing a letter to them(that's what I did) because I didn't want to go back to their office, but they said they needed proof with my signature on it and I couldn't do it over the phone.

Loollea
it is your job to notify your previous company that you do not wish to renew, the previous insurance company cannot take an order
from another insurance company, only from you

twocute4u
Just to be on the safe side, I would notify them just to let them know that you have decided to go with another insurance company.

How in the world would State Farm know that you have other insurance if you don't tell them?

Yes, you have to tell them, and you have to give them something in writing - not verbal. And in some states, you have to give them "evidence" of the new policy, either a copy of the binder, or a 2A form, or an insurance id card or something.

You should call them. You may need to sign something so that you do not have any earned premium. Its also a good idea in case you ever need to go back to State Farm.

notaclue
I believe the new insurance company generally does that but would check with yours just to be sure! If it's car insurance you'll probably get a letter from DMV asking you to forward proof of insurance. Just mail them an ID card and they'll be satisfied.

The new insurer will notify your previous company. However, you will continue to use the prepaid portion of your policy until they are notified. Therefore, the sooner you notify your old company the better because it means you will get more money returned on your old premium.

Andrea W
Esurance should have given you a form to give to state farm to terminate insurance coverage if not contact their customer service department and ask for one
