I live in Dallas, TX.
I'm 18, female, not pregnant, nor do I have a kid living with me.
I am UNEMPLOYED (trying to get a job) and have NO income.
I live with my friend, he probably makes $20-$30k/year.
A hospital I recently went to said I didn't qualify because I wasn't pregnant and didn't have a kid living with me.
What -- the -- HELL?
What am I supposted to do? I need to see a doctor badly but I have no insurance (obviously) and no money.

Ick forgot to mention that this stuff is a bit new to me -- I was kicked out of my home suddenly so I really don't know much about this but I'll check out the things you guys listed. Also, I refuse to have a kid for medical care -- thats stupid. Don't worry :). |

Then if you don't qualify for Medicaid, go to a free clinic or local hospital and apply for Charity Care. Please do not go out and have a child to get medical coverage, and also be mindful that there are many "employed" individuals out there in the U.S., that do not have health insurance or adequate of substantial medical insurance. Also, if you were a full time student in most colleges, they provide health services to students for little or no fees, maybe applying to college would be the way to go, you get an education and you can have some medical coverage for at least 4 years and a part time job, there you go, McDonalds or another establishment in the like. If you sit and dwell on the no insurance situation as opposed to trying to solve the situation, it will not get any better. Do some leg work, you are on the computer, Google? Just go to the doctor. And get a job, to make money to pay him. Or a second job.
The medicaid income guidelines are strict, but they are MUCH more lenient if you are pregnant - about 4X as high. They're also lenient for your child, if you have a kid living with you. |

I think the hospital doesn't know what it's talking about. 18 year olds ARE eligible as a child. You should be eligible for Medicaid up to age 19. Your friend's income shouldn't have anything to do with it. Call your local HHSC office or call 2-1-1 and tell someone there your situation and see if you can't be covered until age 19 as a child. |

Borrow the $ from your friend and see the doctor. It doesn't cost as much as going to the emergency room, which you may wind up having to do if you don't see your doctor soon. When you get a job, pay your friend back, it shouldn't cost more than $80 to see your doctor without insurance. |

I am really offended by some of the responses here to this poor girls question. I have a niece right now in the same predicament. She is 22yrs, part-time college student working her way through college - no kid....single - taking care of herself, paying for an auto, car insurance, rent etc.. She has no insurance and is not on any kind of assistance. She too would never take the welfare road. I live far away from her and I am trying to find a doctor or clinic who can see her........she has a medical condition that needs to be seen by a specialist, she can't be seen at one of those walk-in mediclinic kind of place. She doesn't have parents who can help her and I don't have a lot of money either. Where does a person go in this situation.......that's an honest question - from a sincere person who needs help. The smart-a-- comments were not necessary. |
