Alice Lockwood | I clean houses - how can I get workman's comp insurance? |
I want to clean houses for a living, but I want to be legit about it. People tell me I should have "workman's comp" insurance. What is that? Where do I get it? How much does it cost? What are the requirements?
Any advice would be appreciated!!! |

Well, workers comp will pay for your medical bills and lost wages if you get hurt. For your job, if you have no employees, it's probably going to cost about $1,000 a year, paid up front.
In some states, unless you're a corporation, or have employees, you can't get it. So a sole proprietor can't get it, in some states.
These people are worried about it, because the HOMEOWNER can be on the hook for your lost wages and medical bills, in some states, if you don't have it.
You'll have to talk to a local agent about this. Most won't write workers comp without general liability (which will also run you over $1,000 a year, paid up front), so start with the guy who does your car insurance, ask him for advice on it.
MY advice is, go clean houses for people who aren't asking you for insurance. In my experience, people who are cleaning houses are pretty much judgement proof, and the business doesn't make enough to justify you buying insurance. (highly controversial, I know, and I expect some insurance professionals here will slam me for that comment.) |

You should contact a reputable insurance broker who deals in business insurance. The Yellow Pages would be an excellent place to start. Workers Comp rates vary widely from state to state and from profession to profession. Get more than one premium price. Good luck. |

If you have employees, you need WC. If you are an "independent contractor" with no employees, you don't need it. |

You can purchase this through an insurance professional, I would contact the one who is carrying your general liability for your business. If you have employees you would need workers comp, If it is just you I would suggest Disability insurance, This protects you everywhere you go not just on the job. If you had an accident you could claim disability. In your situation you would use the money from disability to find a sublet contractor to keep your accounts serviced. You still make the revenues from there but use the money from your disability to pay the other person. When you are ready to come back to work you will still have all your accounts, with out this plan you would loss all your accounts and probably go out of business or have to start over. Good Luck |

1. What is it? It is insurance coverage that covers injured workers for medical treatment and disability benefits when they are hurt at work. Even if you are the owner with no employees, your customers may require you carry it to protect them should you get injured while on their premises.
2. Where do you get it? You'll need to contact either a commercial insurance broker, or the state work comp carrier (State Fund in California).
3. Costs? Unknown, but should be minimal as you are your own employee. |

Employers, not workers, pay for workman's comp insurance. |
