I dont have insurance but I want to get blood work done?
ive been really sick i think i may be diabetic. How should i go about this. Go to a family doctor and just pay the money or what? Is the amount going to be outrageous?

check with your County or State's public health system. Many of them bill you according to your salary wage income, known as sliding scale. Bring proof of income such as the last 3 months of your paycheck stub. This way if you find you need follow-up care, then you are now established with the clinic there.

This will most likely be the most cost effective way to have yourself looked at. Otherwise, some doctors and walk-in clinics do give a "discount" for services not insurance billed if you prefer not to use the public healthcare system. However, the blood work is always a separate billing from the doctor's.

If you choose to see a private doctor, you must be up front and tell them the fact you have no insurance and will they accept a pyament program. Many do not because they have not gotten paid and history tells them the cost of collections exceeds the amount of bill due so it become either way, a money loss. You do not want to arrive and see a doctor and find out there was not a payment program as they will demand payment prior to you leaving

Good luck!

blood work is pretty expensive (even with insurance) a lot of doctors offer discounts to patients who cannot afford to pay the entire balance- inquire at you office if they do this (you may need to fill out some paperwork)- if not try to find a local clinic that would offer the service at a cheaper rate- but def. ask!!

You can look for docs through clinics--med school, nursing school, county health, "free" clinics, etc. If you hear of a good doc, ask what they'll charge if you pay cash in full at the time of visit--most will give a discount.

You should be able to get a blood test for a reasonable price. Some grocery stores have labs come in and without a doctor's orders there are tests you can have. You really want a hemoglobin A1c if you think you could be diabetic. And a fasting blood sugar. They will send you your results and they will show if they're normal or not.
If you don't have a place that does that, you can call the county health department and see if they do it and for what cost. Also there are some hemoglobin A1c tests on sale at some pharmacies. I've never used one (I do the labs through the grocery stores). Ask the pharmacist what he thinks. IF you get an abnormal result you'll have to see a doc. There really is no way around it as diabetes is serious.

One way or another you should be able to get an answer without going broke. IF you have diabetes explain your finances. Doc can see if generic metformin will work for you--$4 a month at WalMart. Watch for a "get a free meter" when you buy test strips deal IF you're diabetic. Or consider this:

Good luck!

i assume you are in America?

if you've been "really sick" you need to be seen by a physician. Soon.

your illness may have nothing to do with blood work, so why pay for a set of tests that may not help?

***
you'll need a physician to read the results of blood testing anyway and tell you what they mean.

the physician also provides the instructions as to what tests the lab will perform.

***
Unfortunately, blood work is one of the absolutely most overpriced medical services going. you're going to want to shop and shop hard on the cost.

my annual physical's blood work last fall was billed at $652 or something like that BUT my insurance company had pre-bargained on it, so the bill was $82 [of which I paid 25].

***
if there is something like it in your area and you qualify, look for a government run clinic. in my area, the county has one which offers reduced fee treatment for eligible clients.

You might want to consider a discounted fee for service heath care network. It gives you access to doctors, labs, and other medical facilities at pre-established rates that are lower than if you just came in off the street. You can find such a program at http://www.MedReliefUSA.com

You should go to the doctor, explain your symptoms, and then explain your financial concerns. The doctor should be able to advise you as to what tests are necessary, how much they will cost, and how you can afford them. Most doctors are willing to set up a payment plan if you are a regular patient. If you don 't have a regular doctor, he should still might be able to point you in the direction of less expensive treatment. The most important thing is for you to see the doctor. There are lots of different symptoms of diabetes including excessive thirst and urination, but these could also be symptoms of other conditions. You really need to find out what's wrong. Good luck to you.

It depends. How old are you and why don't you have insurance and where do you live? Your best bet would be to look for a community health center in your area. They should have some kind of sliding scale or free care available. That is what I used to do when I didn't have insurance. If you email me I will try to help you look up where a health center near you is, if you want. You could also call the hospital and tell them your situation and ask to speak with someone in the financial/benefits department. They may be able to help set you up with a free or inexpensive state health insurance.

How are you going to have it done if you are not willing to pay for it. Do you work without pay?

Greg R
Well If you apply for a Life Insurance policy for over $100,000 you will get a free blood and urine test. I know MetLife sends the records of your tests to you for free too. If you do not want the life insurance you will have 10 day from when the policy is delivered to cancel it. Also you could cancel it anytime during the application period.

You just go to a doctor and pay them. How much it costs will depend on what you have done.
