reno | I got denied health insurance, why? |
my husband and i had a baby in may of 07. i had my own insurance through work when our baby was born and had a c section. my husband had insurance through his work. after our baby was born i quite my job and was put on my husbands insurance along with our baby through his work. this december he went into private practice, he's a lawyer. and we had to get an individual plan instead of the group plan. we even went through the same insurance company. today i called and my daughter and husband were accepted but i was denied. I don't get it I'm so upset. I had insurance continuously for the last 12 years. I don't know why I was denied yet because they have to send the reason why in the mail. I've never had any medical issues or anything I can think of why I'd be denied. Please inform me on what the problem might be. Any underwriters out there? I live in oregon if that helps. |

I would appeal that on the hiipa fact that if you haven't gone over 63 days without coverage, they can't deny you for "pre existing " condition. Shame on them. |

This article is from June 25, 2008.
The Times story this weekend reported on otherwise healthy women with previous Cesarean sections who are denied health insurance when they apply for coverage in the individual market (unless they are beyond their reproductive years or have proof of sterilization, that is). The insurance companies’ rationale? Well, women with a previous C-section are more likely to have another C-section, and insurers just don’t want to take on that financial risk. |

Are you currently pregnant? Are you overweight? Are you on any maintenance medications? Those would be the three most common reasons. |

Unfortunately, the fact that you had insurance continuously for 12 years doesn't make much of a difference when it comes to medical underwriting. Either you meet their medical criteria or you don't.
You should find out the explanation in the mail soon. (They do have to provide it to you.) But in the meantime...are you still of reproductive age? Were you trying to purchase a policy with a maternity rider? What was the reason for your c-section? Did you have a complicated pregnancy? Are you currently overweight or taking any regular medications?
There must be something else in addition to *only* the fact that you had a c-section (such as the reason for the c-section or if you plan to have any more kids, or something else not related to your pregnancy at all).
I've had 2 c-sections, and I was able to purchase a private health insurance policy. However, the policy excluded maternity, because I'm not going to be having any more children.
If it turns out that the only reason is the c-section, perhaps you should inquire if you'd be eligible to purchase a health plan that excludes maternity. |

Ya, that is the way it is with insurance! If it is going to cost them more in the future they don't want to take a chance! I am so sorry you had to go through that! If you are in need of an alternative send me a email I can help. |
