My apartment was flooded by my dog chewing on a water pipe in the bathroom when i was at work. I came home and my apartment had been flooded as well as the one beneath me. The neighbor below me lost a few items. I do not have renters insurance and she does not have renters insurance. I have to cover the costs of the constant fans and dehumidifiers in both apartments and the fixing of the cracked ceiling beneath me. Will I be responsible for her items that she lost during the freak accident that was my dogs fault? |

yes it is your fault for not keeping the dog away from vantage points. Paying it will be a butt, although if you find some sort of loan to help you, then you could possibly afford it atm, and be able to pay it slowly |

Can they prove it was your dog? if they not know, try to keep quiet, and play dumb... but I am assuming they know by now.
In plain in English, Yes, you have to pay. Your landlord is allowed to sue you.

Depending on your states law you could be.
I am in Texas, if that were to happen here you would have to cover ALL charges including damged or loss items of anyone and everyone affected.

In Texas most policies do not cover losses due to pets. Bottom Line: Why don't you have renters insurance? It sounds to me that your out of luck and will be left paying the damages. |

Well, I think legally, eventually, you can be held responsible for the damage your dog does. This isn't a normal wear/tear/leak kinda thing.
So ultimately, I think you'll be responsible for her items, and the landlord's plumbing bill - and the water damage to the walls. |

It could go both ways. I wouldn't pay her unless she was your friend or something. If she wants money she should sue. Your defense is that is what renter's insurance is for. |
