I had a totaled vehicle in Jan 07, (not at fault) can i use this on my taxes?

Only if an insurance company doesn't reimburse you for it. Only UNINSURED losses are deductible, and they have to exceed a certain part of your income.

bobcat 007
if you suffered a loss, and not paid by insurance

Not if it isnt a work vehicle. Their are times when you lose things of value that are uninsured that can be deducted as a casualty loss, but they have high limits and you need to itemize.

work vehicle, yes to the extent it isnt already depreciated and uninsured.

personal vehicle, yes if its a big uninsured loss and exceeds the floors for casualty losses and you itemize and you have positive income to cover it.

Nope, unless buying the new one was a business expense in which case you can get some of that tax money back. But since it was not technically income, nor did you pay taxes on your insurance check then it is not something you can claim.

plusqueparfaite
I had the same thing happen last year. I didn't find any way to get credit for the totaled vehicle but I was able to deduct the sales tax on the new car I bought to replace it. TurboTax has a module that walks you through this.

couponcorner
I don't think so, but Turbo Tax can tell you.
