If you contact the hospital (and other providers that are billing you for this service) ask about what kind of financial assistance they offer. Many have programs for financially needy. You may qualify for medicaid in your state-but they will only go back 3 months from the date of application to cover medical costs.
If you don't qualify for any of those, see if you can get a discounted rate-usually that will require that you pay that amount in full-in one payment, but if you can do it, it will save you alot.
My experience has been that even if you make a small payment monthly, your account can still go to collection and that collection agency will tack on interest-so the soomer you look into assistance, the better.
You should look into some type of insurance to cover you in the future. Even a high deductible insurance would have saved you some money in this instance. Find an independant agent in your area and see what you can afford. Accidents and unplanned illness can happen at any time and you need to be more financially prepared! |

Well unless you have the money then you would need to pay it out on a monthly basic.
I have over $10,000 worth of bills i never could pay for and most people cant pay for there bills. Try your best not to let that happen but if it does never let your self file for bankruptcy or your credit if any that you may have well not get messed up. |

I am having the same problem, I did find a web site that offers health insurance that will also go back 3 months and pay for your unpaid medical bills... www.qhealth.com... I'm not sure if they offer it in your area but, you can check it out. This insurance costs 40.00 a month but it covers the E.R, radiology and prescriptions... They offer to different plans, also an 88.00 a month plan that offers you E.R, radiology, prescription, eye and dental...and that also goes back 3 months of unpaid medical bills...
I hope this helps you out even a little! |

It's tough to realize that hospitals and health services are so expensive...Aside of having health insurance, bills can exceed what is covered. Nearly all of the respondents so far have given good advice; a "work-out" agreement must be met with the hospital and the different departments that are sending you an invoice. With that said, it is EXTREMELY important that, once you've come to a payment schedule, you make the payments on-time. If not, the agreement could be anulled, and you could find yourself in serious credit problems. Also, make sure that you agree to a payment plan that you know you can afford. Those who are in foreclosure on their homes understand this issue all too well.
Finally, whether you have health insurance or not, voluntary benefit plans like what Aflac offers would have helped in this case. Major medical plans (e.g. Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, etc.) pay doctors and hospitals, but voluntary, supplemental insurance policies are designed to pay you cash benefits that can be used to pay for anything you wish. In your case, the money could have been put towards the overruns for your ER visit that were not picked-up by your major medical insurance.
Nearly 1.5 million people are faced with bankruptcy filings because of an unfortunate medical hardship in the country annually. On top of that, approximately 80 million people carry substantial credit card debt or loose their retirement savings to pay for medical bills each year! For more information on the issue, google search: Medical Bankruptcy, and you will find millions of hits on this very subject. Our media system has reported on this subject from time to time, but most still remain in the dark about this big problem! |

Make payments and set up a payment plan so it doesn't go to collections and ruin your credit. |

Kudos for even considering to attempt to pay this extremely large bill. All I can recommend is to see about setting up monthly payments with the hospital. Whatever you do, do not default on your monthly payments. As long as you pay them something monthly, there really isn't much that can be done. Pay them what you can every month, even if only $25, more would be better. Good luck. Did the ER have you fill out a form to see if you could get emergency medicaid for that particular visit, or do they have an indigent care plan? |

Give them a small payment each month, they will not turn it down. What else can you do? Their prices are ridiculous anyway. |

send them $5 a month, as long as they are receiving payment ( no matter how small) they can not turn you into collection agencies, and they will not hassle you! |

call them and set up a payment plan - this happens to lots of people. If you make small, regular payments, they cant do anything about it, but you have to at least pay something on a regular basis. |

There are state programs that help people without or with little health insurance.
In MA there are programs that go through the state, and if you don't qualify for them, then hospital based.
Goodluck,
If I can be of help, let me know.
