freudianfate | I have a life insurance question? |
how do I get life insurance on my BF? or do he have to get one and make me the beneficiary? |

Either one of you can buy the policy. If YOU buy it, he has to sign consent, release medical records, and do the same paramedical exam as if he was buying it.
You talk to a local agent, who can help get quotes, and help you guys fill out the applications.
Whoever owns the policy on his life, has to pay the premium, and picks who gets the money if he dies. So if HE owns it, and you break up, he can pick someone else to get the money. |

He has to take out the policy. If you pay the premiums and later breakup you have lost all that money for nothing.
So, let him pay. That may be different if you have children together. |

You can get it on your BF or he can get it on himself. Either way he would have to agree to it and he would have to go through the application with the agent and sign it.
If you are paying the premiums you would get to decide who the beneficiary is as the policy owner. And if you break up, he can't cancel the policy without going through you since you own the policy.
If he is paying the premiums on it he would get to decide who the beneficiary is on it. Once/If you break up, he can change the beneficiary to whom ever he pleases since he would own the policy.
Regarding insurable interest, this has nothing to do with whether you are married, common law or just a GF...technically, you don't even need to be dating someone to possibly have insurable interest in a person. Generally, as long as you would directly suffer a financial loss due to his passing away (IE: If you have a child together, if you live together, if you have any shared debts together, if your have a business of some kind together, if you are dependent on him financially, etc), you have insurable interest. It might be defined specifically in whatever country, province or state you are in, so be sure to check with a local agent to make sure you aren't in one of the exceptions to the rule. |

He has to get it on his own and make you the beneficiary. |

Why do you need to get life insurance on him? However this is done, he is the one who will have to give over his information and sign any consents to look at records. If you want to be sure that the premiums are paid, put yourself as the one to receive them. I believe, as owner of the policy, he can change the beneficiary any time he wants. Ask your agent.
You have to have an insurable interest in him. I don't think a girlfriend falls into that category. |

You can buy life insurance on anyone you want to.
Just get term life and you can cancel anytime if necessary. |
