I have a question about pre-existing conditions?
Okay lets say you & your kids have health insurance & all is going good & then you find out your child has a disease due to a genetic mutation like sickle cell or rett syndrome...would the health insurance not cover this & consider it a pre-existing condition even if you've had the coveregae since their birth?

Also would the hereditary factor of the disease make difference. Like a spontaneous mutation that was just one in a million or a family having a certian history of a disease be looked at in the same way?

Pre-existing does not come into play unless you are applying for insurance after having a lapse (or gap) in coverage. If the child has had continuous coverage since the diagnosis of the condition, then you will never have a problem with pre-existing conditions. Only if you have a gap in coverage for at least 63 days will this be a problem.

If you have had the coverage since birth, it is not a pre-existing condition. A condition is considered to start on the day you have the first symptom of it, not on the day you get it.
However, sometimes insurance companies have a list of things that they will not cover, no matter what the circumstances. Check your policy for that.

It is not considered a pre-existing condition because you have had coverage for them since birth.

As a side note for any parents with kids with a genetic disorder. If, for whatever reason, the child is uninsured and the parents income is below a certain level the child would qualify for the state medi-caid type program. Families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid may be able to qualify for The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

Sadly, once that child is no longer a minor such insurances are unavailable to adults with chronic disorders--unless they are disabled. Many conditions are chronic, treatable but not disabling.

That's not a pre-existing condition. It would only be pre-existing upon changing coverage.

A genetic disorder does make a difference with most insurance companies. You need to find out what difference it makes by calling an agent or the company and simply asking them what exclusions there are for such things. If you did not know your child had the condition, that may also be a factor.

A pre-existing condition is usually considered something that the insured could have "prevented" by taking better care: i.e., diabetes, or heart disease. But there are companies who will not insure a genetically challenged individual. So find out before you swtich or buy more!
