After my car accident I got worried about leaving my daughter nothing and orphaned (her dad is already dead) so I signed up for accidental death coverage since it was only $5/month. So I've always wondered if I were to be murdered, would that count as an accident for insurance purposes?
Additional Details
I know suicide is not included in coverage but was just curious about being murdered. Of course I don't actually expect to be murdered. |

You need to check your policy closely. Some accident policies state exactly what accidents are covered such as auto only. Some cover any accident and yes, unlike some of the people here have said, murder generally is considered an accident. It may be investigated and if found that you some how started a fight that resulted in your death, you may not be covered. It would be much better if you purchased a term policy to make sure your daughter has something regardless of how death occurs. It can be purchased for a little more than what you are paying for the accident only policy. Try www.insureme.com. |

I would think so, but you might want to read the fine print... you should know exactly what you're getting for your money, or what you're not getting.

Yes, it is. Suicide isn't and if you commit the murder you can't collect the insurance money because you can't profit from your illegal activities. |

It depends on who you have coverage with and the state you live in.
Usually murder is covered, but terrorism and acts of war are not.
The appeal of accident policies is that they are inexpensive. There are a lot of things that are excluded in their coverage.
If you are truly concerned about your daughter, get a term policy on your life for as many years as it takes until she is 21 or so. Make the beneficiary payable to the guardian you have appointed for her. When she turns 18, change the beneficiary to her.
Be sure the company you go with has an "A" rating with AM Best. Term policies are not that expensive and be sure the premium will never increase and the benefit never decrease. |
