Our family has a discount benefit plan. We were tired of traditional insurance and the high cost of premiums. We chose to bank our premium money and go with a low cost benefit plan. We pay $40 a month and get Medical, Hospital, Ancillary Services, Nurse-line, Dental, Vision, Rx and Chiropractic Services for the whole family. We have saved thousands of dollars on our bills. It's wonderful! They have a few different plans depending on your needs. There are no application fees to get a quote. You just call or go to their site and it's all in black and white. You can contact them for detailed answers to your questions too. We've been so happy with our plan. We saved $2200 on orthodontic work for my husband, my niece saved 50% off her LASIK surgery, we have saved thousands on regular doctor and dentist visits too.
I found them here: http://www.HealthandDentalOptions.com |

Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company.
If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles, low copays and optional vision and dental benefits your monthly premiums will be significant. This often is why group coverages can be more expensive than individual plans.
On the other hand if you are young and healthy and rarely use the health care system you could consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe which will result in a relatively low monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead.
You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. That adviser can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and copays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network. Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health situation.
Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. Some might even "pitch" a discount plan that is not insurance at all. Use the Internet to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.
An application fee is unusual. |

You should see an independent agent that handles individual health plans. But it is very unlikely that you will find comparable coverage for less than an employee group plan. Anyplace asking for fees up front is a scam. |

Depending on the company, an application fee is normal when applying for the insurance but it is not normal for getting quotes. An application fee of $25 or less is standard; any fee greater is probably either a scam or a discount plan.
Group policies are usually higher in cost because of the state mandated coverage. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can explain what all of the plans cover and will make sure you have the coverage you need. There is no extra charge using an agent.
FYI - in most cases you will not be able to drop your current coverage until open enrollment so you'll need to find out when that is for your policy before you apply for an individual plan. |
