I have just become self employed with occasional use of my car for business. Shall I inform my car insu?
Is my insurance premium going to increase a lot? Is there any risk if I just fail to inform the insurer?
Your insurer should be informed if you change the use of your car. If you were to (for example) be involved in an accident while on your way back from the wholesalers your insurers (based on police evidence and statements taken at the scene) may refuse to pay out. At worst they could claim that you were not insured and therefore you would have broken the law and be subject to having your car impounded, 3 or more penalty points and a fine.

better to be safe than sorry
premiums will depend on what your business is and how high risk it is
eg will you be carrying expensive tools, stock or equipment
Father Jake
Your insurance may be void if you don't inform them.

Yes inform them. Your premium may well go up but that is better than them voiding your policy after you have had an accident when their assessor finds your car full of samples/goods/work tools or whatever. When you inform them stress business use would be less than 5% of your annual mileage (no way they could police that and it may help).

if you can get away without informing them , y not.

You should and you will probably get a cheaper rate. This is especially true if you work from your home because you will not be using your vehicle as much and there is less chance of an auto accident according to the insurance company. Make sure you tell them you use it for less then 1500 miles a year if this is true. It will make a difference
