Financial Assistance and Other Resources for People With Cancer
Cancer imposes heavy economic burdens on both patients and their families. For many people, a portion of medical expenses is paid by their health insurance plan. For individuals who do not have health insurance or who need financial assistance to cover health care costs, resources are available, including Government-sponsored programs and services supported by nonprofit organizations. Cancer patients and their families should discuss any concerns they may have about health care costs with their physician, medical social worker, or the business office of their hospital or clinic.

In 1946, Congress passed a law that gave hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities grants and loans for construction and modernization. In return, they agreed to provide a reasonable volume of services to persons unable to pay and to make their services available to all persons residing in the facility’s area. The program stopped providing funds in 1997, but about 300 health care facilities nationwide are still obligated to provide free or reduced-cost care.

Try calling each of the medical offices that you owe, it would be ideal if you could offer them cash for a reduction. I had a medical procedure awhile back that was about $98,000 my insurance company only had to pay less than $3,000 to settle the bill completely, another procedure was $48,000 and the hospital was paid about $2,200.

If you are unsuccessful you can file for bankruptcy or consult with a debt consolidation company, these companies can usually get a significant reduction of the debt while you pay a fixed amount over 3 to 5 years. I know a person that had excessive credit card debt (over $50,000) that only pays $57 per month for 3 years.

The stigma of bankruptcy is not what it used to be either, in the old days you could hardly get credit for 7 years but now they look at you as say "they don't owe anything and cannot file bankruptcy for 7 more years so they are a reasonable risk)

Other option include state aid (Medicaid etc..) try those first
before bankruptcy and if your health problems are serious and you are going to need more medical attention then you need to find ongoing assistance or get insurance.

Good luck to you

Try to make a deal for reduced fees and offer small regular payments and threaten bankruptcy.

Look up Hill Burton Act. It is a government funded program for people in your situation. You have to fill out paper work but it could save you from despair if you qualify.

Call the hospital and ask for a social worker, they often have charities that help defray medical expenses.

Otherwise, send 'em ten bucks a week forever - you may never pay it off, but it won't screw your credit the way it would if you ignore it.

Spring loaded horsie
Try calling the billings office for each medical bill you have. hospitals are always willing to help lower the debt. They may even set you up on a payment plan that suits you. If you can't make those payments looking into bankruptcy. That is a lot of debt to have over your head. Good Luck!

My brother is in a similar situation. He was advised to apply to Medicaid for help.

Also, there might be an organization for your particular health problem that might help, like the ALS Foundation, etc.

The other thing you can do in the meantime is pay a little bit (whatever you can afford) each month on each bill. You can't get in trouble if you make an honest effort to meet your obligations. Just make sure you communicate with each company or doctor that you owe.

I hope this helps and I wish you good health.

I had $30,000 in debt for having no insurance. It took me almost 5 years to pay it off. Yours is so large that you may have to claim bankruptcy. Meanwhile, you should at least get a very cheap health insurance policy. You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than ½ after I did.

Take care,
Casey
