Kiwi | I have renter's insurance on my apartment. I'm moving to a home my husband owns. Do I need the renter's for? |
miscellaneous extra stuff I will be keeping in a storage unit?
Do I need to write my insurance company and advise them that my (excess) personal belongings will be kept in a storage unit? What information do I need to provide?
He, of course, has homeowner's insurance that would cover a loss of anything inside the home. |

You do not need to keep your renters policy since you are married & moved in with your husband, you are insured on his policy. (definition of a named insured is: Named insured and spouse if the spouse is a resident of the same household).
If he has a standard HO 00 03 policy, contents coverage is worldwide. The only limitations for off premises contents is 10% (of the contents limit on the policy) at another insured location, meaning another house or apartment, not a storage unit. You of course have special limits on jewelry, silver, furs, guns, watercraft, business contents, etc so you have to read the policy to know what yours are.
The best thing to do is to call your husband's agent & discuss the contents in storage with him. This way the company is also aware of these contents. |

It would be best to check with the storage site to see what insurance and liability they carry in the event of fire of theft. You can also call your agent to see if they will still cover you at the storage place for the short time that you need it (I'm hoping it's short time!)
If you don't write them or inform them and items are damaged or stolen from a different location than the apartment you are currently in, I can assure you... DENIED!!! |

Things kept in a storage unit should be covered under your homeowners policy, but you may have separate limit for personal property away from the premises. Since you're married, you should be able to call your husband's insurance agent and ask him. That's really the only way to know. |

It likely is covered by the homeowners policy, but you should check with your agent to be sure of the limits. Similarly, personal items stolen from your car or while on vacation are liely covered by your home owners insurance. |

1. Homeowners Ins does not cover "anything" inside the home. It covers personal property of the "named insured".
2. Insurance companies will not extend coverage to personal property kept in a storage unit. You would need to check with the unit managers to see if they offer coverage.
Call your agent and discuss what your options are. Also just to be on the safe side have your husband list you as second named insured on the homeowners policy. Best wishes. |
