S S | I just accidentally found out my co-worker makes very close to my salary and I have been there 4 years longer? |
I am a manager and she is technically my employee and I have about 10 times the responsibility she does. I just found out she brings home $37 less than me a week. I feel very hurt and angry, but in light of the economic situation and lack of jobs to choose from, I am stuck. What would you do? Additional Details I did actually see her paycheck... and as far as deleting it from my memory I WISH. I really wish I didn't know this infomation because it makes me feel be-littled and abused. I have always held the highest regard for the compnay I work for and have been completely loyal to them when they have been walked all over by several people. I just feel that this is a stab in the back, and like I said I feel stuck because at least in my field, there aren't very many jobs to choose from. Also, I just looked up what I should be making on salary.com and I make about 20-30,000 less than the average for property managers in my area! |

Salary.com is just a guide. It's about as useful as Zillow is for valuing your home. Neither Salary.com or Zillow is that accurate. I've looked up my house and my job. Look at them for curiosity sake, but nothing more.
As far as your employee's money - it's not uncommon for an employee to make the same and even more than the boss. Yes, a good front line employee can make the same and even more than the boss.
There are usually 2 tracts in a company - the management tract and the front line tract. The management tract is just another way of going. It's different job responsibilities but not necessarily more money. If you have an employee that has been with the company longer than you....odds are they are making more than you are. Very common in the corporate world.
It's also possible that after you were hired the starting salary was raised. When this happens, it goes up for new hires but not for every one. This happened to me - I was in the job 2 years. Worked my fanny off and got great reviews. Then the company raised the starting salary. As a result - new hires w/o any experience came in the door making more than I did. The company decided to change the salary for only new hires but did not give every one else a bump. Does it stink when this happens -- you bet. But all you can do is suck it up.
There is no rule that says you have to be paid more because you have been there longer or are in a supervisory position. |

Did you see her gross or her net? She may not contribute to the 401k or have other deductions that you do. |

READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, what a pickle! If it were me, I'd not say anything and go about my business as if I didn't know. Whoever told you that could be lying. Unless you actually saw the girl's paystub, I wouldn't believe it. Someone could be wanting you to get mad and go ask the boss so that you will get into trouble. Even if it is true, it's none of anyone's business what anyone else makes, period.
Stay safe. |

About 10 years ago I found myself in a very similar situation, I quite franky demanded a wage rise and they gave in but not to the extent that I wanted, I again stated my case but they refused to budge. I didn't rant or rave but I waited til it was the right time for me and handed in my notice, I half expected them to at least try and offer me more but they didn't, called my bluff I suppose. I was at that company for 13 years, first job outta college, it was sad but I realized that I just went with the flow and didn't rock the boat enough, however I didn't seek other employment I set up my own business and to be honest there has been ups & down bt the best decision I ever made.
Go for a raise and if no joy, bide your time and make your move when its right for you, don't lose it & just walk out! |

If it were me, I would look for another job.
This happens ALL THE TIME. Her pay isn't related to your pay - it's a reflection of how much the company had to pay, to bring her on, when they had the opening.
If you're making less than market value, you can talk to YOUR manager, but MOST major pay increases happen when you switch jobs. So, if she's been there not as long as you, they've gotten complacent about paying you.
All of MY major pay increases, have happened switching employers. |

the fact of the matter is that most bosses won't give you a raise unless you ask for one. don't mention your coworker, but instead have a meeting with your boss and present 3 separate situations where you showed your value to the company, and ask for a raise. also always ask for a bit more than you expect to get so that your pay "compromise" will still be a decent pay increase. |

Ouch! Life's an effin ******, isn't it?
Keep your job, but try looking for another one with better pay. And if you don't find one, you'll still have your job. |
