jamie m | I just got a speeding ticket , will my insurance rate increase? |
The officer reduced to 15 kph over in a 40 kp zone and said that I will not lose any points- will this affect my insurance? |

Technically speaking, your insurance rates SHOULD go up as that is standard procedure for when your driving records worsens from what the insurance company originally rated you. In all actuality, most insurance companies don't have the time to sit there and monitor your driving record. This is probably something that will happen at your renewal when they pull a new driver report on you. I don't think one speeding ticket is going to change things much, you probably won't see much difference.
Good luck! |

Any speeding ticket, regardless of the speed will increase your insurance, usually by 1 or 2 points. Massachusetts has a system where the first ticket is forgiven, but most other states don't have this. You insurance will increase if your state has a license STEP system. |

Even though the police officer stated that you will not lose any "points" he/she is referring to administrative points deducted from your driving record. Insurance companies generally surcharge for each incident, i.e. moving violations such as speeding, red light tickets, etc. and each at fault accident that you have within the last 3 years. The surcharge lasts for 3 years from the date of conviction which is the date the ticket is paid or the date the court finds you guilty of the charge.
However, if you have not yet paid for this ticket, I would contest the ticket. Many of my clients report that when they go to court to contest the ticket police officers rarely show up and the ticket gets thrown out since there is no one to provide testimony against you. It is worth the few hours you will spend since best case scenario the case gets thrown out and worst case you wasted your time and had to pay anyway.
Also note companies reserve their best rates for people who have 1 or less "incidents". More than one "incident' in 3 years usually results in your getting cancelled or moved to higher rated tier.
Good Luck! |

Most likely, it will affect your auto insurance.
Typically upon renewal, your auto carrier will run a report that shows any activity on your driving record since the last renewal. If there are new violations (speeding tickets, other driving citations, accidents, etc.), your rates will increase. How much, I think, depends on the particular insurance company. |

No way of knowing. Some states/companies don't surcharge you the first ticket, some do. Some won't truly "surcharge" you, but will withhold a "driving credit" for the year you get the ticket.
You'll have to ask your agent to be sure. |
