it depends on several factors. You must prove your disability is so bad that you can't work.
1. get all the medical documentation from the day your disability started (because they are going to ask when your disability started). Make 2 copies and keep the original and give 1 copy to ssa (in case your case goes to the administrative law judge, you can give a copy to your lawyer, in which you are entitled to. (you have 4 chances to prove your disablity; the initial application, the reconsideration, to see the administrative law judge, and judicial review))
2. it will also depend on the cost of living in your state
go to http://www.ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1213 and either the website or the telephone reps can help you. (FYI: if you are too disabled to go to your local ssa office you can request an telephone interview and they will do the application over the telephone. They will then mail the paperwork for you to sign and return. When you return the application mail them the medical documentation.) |

Check with your Social Security office. It depends on the disability percentage and many other factors. |

First you must qualify...start with your Doctor and work from there... |
|

Common Sense
|
A. Your doctor has no say in wether you can get on disability or not.
B. SS Disability has nothing to do with the "state" you live in.
C. How much you collect is directly related to how much, each year you (and your employers) have contributed over your working life.
When you are interviewed by SS Disability you can get a pretty close estimate on what to expect.
How do I know?
Been there, done that. |

Social Security Disability is paid according to how much you earned during your working years. In other words, it depends on how much you have contributed over the years.
First of all, you must have contributed to Social Security for at least 40 quarters (10 years). If you have not contributed for 40 quarters, then you do not qualify.
Secondly, your doctor does not determine if you are disabled under Social Security's rules. Social Security make that determination. If Social Security does not have enough medical evidence of TOTAL disability from your medical records, they send you to a Social Security doctor to make a final determination. Social Security does not pay partial disability. A person must be unable to do "any" job to qualify. The total disability must be expected to last for at least one year or you do not qualify.
I made over $90K per year when I was working, my SSDI pays less than 20K. I had also paid for private disability coverage for years. That coverage, supposedly was to pay 80% of my salary if I became disabled. After I became disabled, I learned that the private disability insurance subtracts your SSDI payments (and your children's Social Security, if any) from your private payment. Therefore you get less (if anything) from your private insurance carrier. For me, the short term coverage paid nothing because they subtracted the state short term disability payments I received. The long term coverage pays $100.00 per month, the least allowed in my state. If I had known that the private coverage would be basically worthless, I would have put the premium money in a mutual fund instead of paying it to the insurance company.
I wish you luck. |
