SadieAnn_1917 | I just purchased a auto insurance policy a few days ago. Can I cancel and go with another company? |
At last minute, I had to get auto insurance with Esurance which I hate. But I really had no other choice. Can I cancel with them and go with another company that will give me a better deal? |

You might be able to cancel it without any fees if you just signed up for it a few days ago. If you have found a cheaper rate at another company, then I would go ahead and cancel even if you have to pay a fee. There is nothing worse than over paying for your auto insurance. That's exactly why it is so important to do your research and compare quotes from atleast 3-5 different insurance companies before you decide who to sign a policy with. |

Yes you can cancel, but before you cancel check to find out if there is a cancellation fee. |

Depending on what state you are living in, there may not be a short rate fee. Also, make sure you secure other insurance BEFORE cancelling. |

Yes I did exactly that. Call up Esurance and tell them you wish to cancel the policy. You don't need to give them a reason.
If you've already made the payment, they will refund you with the unused amount minus any cancellation fees (if applicable). |

Question:
Why did you allow a cartoon to sell you an auto policy in the first place?
In my opinion, the best place to buy an auto policy, or any policy, is to buy from a local professional agent. You have a "face" to speak to if you need to, and the local office can assist you in filing claims.
(Yes, the local agent EARNS a commission from the purchase of your policy, but he/she is there to help you, and to advise you, about your particular insurance need)
You can cancel your policy with esurance, but you will more than likely be charged a "short rate". Which means you will receive a refund of the unearned portion of your premium, minus a 10% surcharge for cancelling midterm. |

I'm sure you can. I don't know if they will give you any money back if you've paid for part of it, though. When I switched from Allstate, I waited till I was due to pay again before I canceled, just to be on the safe side. |

You can cancel your insurance anytime, but there will be a penalty to pay. Cancelling an insurance policy in the middle of the policy period (rather than when it expires) is called a "short rate cancellation." The penalty is 10% of the unearned premium (the premium that applies to the policy period after the cancellation date). For example, if the premium was $600 for a six month period and you cancelled the policy one month into the policy period, you would have used $100 worth of the premium. The remaining $500 premium is unearned. You would get back $450, not $500 because the penalty of 10% ($50) would apply. |

Sure you can. But it will probably cost you a month's premium, and maybe a cancellation fee. |
