I lost my phone...should I lie for insurance?
I lost my phone but the insurance I pay £8 per month for only covers theft. Should I just say it was stolen and do I therefore have to lie to the police? Has anyone else been in a similar situation and able to advise?

Chris
You could lie but that constitutes fraud and is probably punishable by a larger fine than it would cost to buy a new phone. I am not sure how it works in the UK but in the U.S. you would also have to file a police report and therefore be subject to filing a false report which is also a crime. On the other hand you might not get caught and so you could get a free phone. This seems like a risk versus reward problem and in my case I would buy a new phone rather than risk criminal actions. However you are responsible for your own actions even if they constitute a crime.

You know the answer really don't you?
Your insurance company would want a Police report to accompany your claim. You would then be guilty of wasting Police time and insurance fraud, and may well get caught and charged with both.
The right thing to do would be to swallow your loss, buy another phone, and take out a better insurance on it.
Only you can decide whether you are responsible enough to do that...

Well the insurance company will want a police report, depends how far you're willing to take it, its up to you how morally you feel about doing it but i pay £8 a month for my phone insurance and it covers everything down to loss and accidental damage, you sure you're not covered?!

No. You should suck it up and buy a new phone. Your integrity and character must be worth more to you than a few bucks.

Your insurance should cover loss. It should cover everything from theft to you actually damaging your phone by accident for example, washing it. Check with your service provider or go straight through to the insurance company itself. If it doesn't cover loss it would be very unusual. I would definitely not lie, that's fraud and it's the reason things are harder on everyone else, like having to have a police report for a stolen cell phone, you may still have to have a notarized affidavit stating it was lost.

Julie
Honesty is supposed to be the best policy, little white lies, not too bad but you might get a bit bogged down with this one.Too risky.

Do you want to risk receving a criminal record if you are caught and risk being arrested for committing fraud?

zippythejessi
Not a good plan to lie. If you get caught in the lie, you'll be charged with insurance fraud and making a false police report.

Making a fraudulent declaration to an insurance company is a criminal offence. I doubt the price of a new mobile phone is worth the risk and, without a crime reference number from the police, you cannot proceed. Do you also want to lie to a police officer?

Personally, I'd just get myself a new phone and take out a more comprehensive phone insurance policy.

sparkle555_2000
No, no, thrice no! You definitely don't want to do this! If you get caught (which is very likely) you will end up having your policy cancelled and a criminal record. Having a criminal record will make it hard for you to find a job in the future, as you have to declare it on the application forms, and very few people would want to employ a dishonest person.

Even if you didn't get caught, the consequences for society are serious. It causes premiums to be higher than they would otherwise need to be, therefore putting insurance policies out of the reach of the people who need them the most (eg the poor and vulnerable).,

if you are paying insurance, then you are covered for an upgrade at a discounted price since you are a customer.

i was asked if my wallet was lost or stolen, i tried to explain to them i didnt know, i dont have it so either i lost it somewhere or someone stole it from me, they made me tell them one or the other,

did you absolutely just lose it? or did it just disappear and it could be from either one?

you should never lie

My mother always says "if in doubt, don't".
If you weren't in doubt I don't think you would be asking the question.
If you're still unsure, do what your conscience tells you to do.

Make the claim if you want too - but if you ever catch yourself moaning about the increasing cost of insurance you must immediately punch yourself in the face until unconciousness ensues.

I know it seems like a white lie but slightly exaggerated or fraudulent claims cost in excess of a billion pounds a year in the UK (& that is just on Motor & Household claims)

It is not the insurance companies who pay for that loss in the long run it is you, me, our families and every other Joe.

For a theft claim you will need to report it to the police and get a crime report number,

Be aware that lying to the police is a criminal offence as is insurance fraud, however are you sure you lost your phone.....someone may have picked your pocket...........

wcqa626
No, call them to suspend your service. And buy another phone, they aren't that expensive on ebay.

jillybean
Yes I have and I said that I was in a restuarant and went to the bathroom and my phone was gone when I got back!

What you can do is phone the Police and say that it was stolen from your pocket on the bus. The Police wont bother to come out to you but they will give you the vital crime number.you then contact the insurance company with the story and you will get a new phone. The police will send you a leaflet a few weeks later telling you that you were a victim of crime. Do you have a concience as your figure will be used by the government and will probably push up your poll tax and contents insurance. Good Luck
