I think it's perverse that in our society we have to worry more about our end of life financial situation rather than our very death itself. Life insurance is not a great option for most of us healthy enough to qualify for it, my advice would be to move from the US to some Nordic country which cares for its elderly.

When I die, I want people to say of me "That guy sure owed me alot of money."

SMITIMB
Easily - it costs about $16 per month for my $300,000 policy, but I'm a 29 year old non-smoker. It will be different when I'm 85 paying $150 per month for $8,000. (adjusted for inflation of course)

I do do disability, but I probably don't need to. Maybe my money will go to someone that needs it.

Yes. First of all, after I am dead, I won't need any money and I won't have to worry about anything. But to seriously answer your question....

I have a small universal life policy that I use almost like a planned savings account, the rest of it I invest. I figure if I die now, I have no debt to pay off, all that my spouse would have to pay for would be the funeral, and she could continue to work and if she ever needed to, she could use our investment money.

The bulk of my money I invest (in mutual funds, stocks, bonds, ETFs) since, 1) I am young enough to earn a good return, 2) the money isn't going to be taken away from me like in the case of a term-policy where after 65 I am pretty much screwed, and 3) with diversification even these bear markets don't hurt too bad.

I think everyone needs a little bit of insurance, or at least enough to cover their debts, but that is the main problem in America today, and the reason people can't afford insurance. Consumer debt. People simply buy too many things they can't afford and get stuck in the debt cycle. I am shocked at how many people have credit card debt equalling greater than 2 months of their income.

I am beginning to like that Dave Ramsey guy more and more everyday that I listen to his show on the way home from work, but that is off-topic, and his advice doesn't really apply to me because I've never really been in debt, and I've been investing and saving since high school.
