I am 22 years old and graduated from a university in May 2008 with a B.S. in Marketing. I am currently unemployed, but working side jobs to make some money. My father owns an insurance brokerage with a book of business exceeding 4,000. Under his advise, I went through the required 52-hours necessary to obtain a California Fire & Casualty Agent License. I passed the test on my first try. Now that I have my license, I want to work for another company and gain the experience to eventually take over my dads company (which he advises as well).
Do you have any recommendations as to what type of position I should be looking to start in? I want to work for a large company as well. Please help! |

Um, $4,000 isn't much of a book of business. So you must mean something else.
The only position you're likely to get, is as a PRODUCER - selling insurance, on a straight commission basis. Unless you're willing to work for peanuts, as a customer service rep at an agency.
YOUR FATHER already has the contacts in your area, HE is the guy you should be asking!!! |

Try getting a job as an underwriter trainee at an insurance company, preferably one your father's agency represents. Having experience on the company side would be very helpful when you are an agent, to see the other side's prespective.
Meanwhile, start taking the CPCU exams. If you are going to have a career in insurance, you might as well get the most prestigious insurance designation. See http://www.aicpcu.org/ |

Oh man you are in good shape. Watch out for non compete clauses. Why doesnt dad want you with him straight away? You can do your time with him instead of a competitor.
