For a typical family plan, that's about right. $1000 per month.
There are some lower cost options.
You could try a high deductible policy that would help cover you if something really bad were to happen, but besides premiums you'd have to pay the little costs of health care until you hit the deductible.
Or, you could try short term plans which are by law limited to six months. You might be able to string together two of those from different companies to get to a year.
But your best alternative is to try to hold out until you can get employed by a company that provides a subsidized or employer sponsored health plan where they pay most of the premiums. |

If you want a real health Insurance Strategy for your family, I would suggest a Health Savings Account (HSA). Since the beginning of time Health Insurance co's have been charging us in advance for services and very few of us actually make any claims. a HSA plan allows us to speculate on future claims and take back the excessive costs of health insurance premiums. I will give you an example of what a typical HSA can save a consumer, and why every Self employed person in America should have a HSA.
Example:
Typical PPO plan- $500 Ded. plan Family aged 43, 41, 11, 8, 6
Monthly Premium is $856.00 Annual Premium is $10,272.00
HSA Plan - $7000 Ded. plan Family aged 43, 41,11, 8, 6
Monthly Premium is $228.00 Annual Premium is $2736.00
Monthly Savings $628.00 Annual Savings is $7536.00
As you can see immediately by the example shown above Health Insurance co's are making "Billions" every year by charging you in advance for services that are never given. They operate on fear not fact, because the truth is that most people are not submitting claims that exceed deductibles. For a HSA to work long term, one should fully fund a HSA account, remember this money and the account belongs to you! Based on the example above I would recommend to fund a HSA at $470.83 per month or $5650.00 per year- whatever you have left over at the end of the year rolls over the next year, so mathematically you have the potential to save over $200,000. in twenty years! Tax Exempt, plus whatever you contribute lowers your gross income so you pay even less tax's. This is the most exciting plan to come around since I have been involved in Healthcare!

Type in search box...einsurance or health insurance. You just have to hunt and peck. See if they have any special qualifiers. Like special rated for home based businesses or entrapanuers. If you sell on ebay, you may qualify. |

If you are just currently laid off from work and couldn't afford to continue your Cobra premiums there ARE temporary policies available. I bought one for 3 months, it could be renewed ONE time for another 3 months. But I got lucky and found another job with good benefits. All I can tell you is just shop around, and look on the internet for sources as well. It's a shame that the insurance companies have us between a rock and a hard place. It's hard to afford, but who can afford NOT to have it when a simple hospital stay can run into thousands of dollars. I wish you luck in your search. |
