I'm uninsured, and due to the psychiatric disability i need the procedure for it is difficult for me to hold onto a job. I have found one i am managing to keep but its part time, min wage with no guaranteed hours and they won't let me work for their competitor. The procedure I want done is electroshock, I've tried dozens of meds over the last 4 years and none help. But it can cost 800-2000 per treatment and usually takes 4-8 treatments to kick in. Public health services only push meds. I think my only option is to find some private insurance and find some way to pay the premium. This is so confusing!! How do I choose one? Last time, i had BCBS but they had a one year waiting period for mental health costs and i cannot wait that long. And they didn't even pay for one hospital stay i had because "We have reason to believe this was self inflicted and we wil not cover" And i didn't even hurt myself, i just admitted because i was having an emergency.
Or even... are there people, like counselors or agents that could help me find the right company or even public aid and set this up? |

Public aid, is called medicaid, and you've said you don't qualify for it.
No private health insurance is going to take you, with a mentall illness.'
No insurance is going to pay for an experimental procedure, just because you want it.
If your doctor thinks this is the appropriate treatment, you should see if he does any charity work. |

I thought that was not done any more or was illegal because we have psychotherapy these days. You have to call a local independent insurance agent, tell him what benefit you need (the mental health and electroshcok) and see if any policies cover this. Other than that, call a university health clinic and ask them if they offer that treatment. You can also call the local medical society and get a referral to a doctor who offers electroshock and call and ask which insurance plans they accept. You might also check for clinical trials and see if any medical labs are performing electroshock to test the results. |

1. Any private insurance for someone who is disabled and already needs $3200-$16,000 of treatment will cost too much for someone who is low income to afford.
2. If you have not had any insurance for more than 63 days, then no private insurance will cover your existing condition for 12-18 months. If you cannot wait a year, then you will have to pay for it yourself. Private insurance will not pay for it during the first year after any period of 63 or more days during which you did not have insurance. |
