You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. Some might even suggest a discount plan which is not insurance at all.

Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company.

If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles and low copays your monthly premiums will be significant.

On the other hand if you are young, healthy and use the health care system rarely you could consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe which will result in a relatively low monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead.

Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health situation. They can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and copays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network.

Use the Internet to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.

We have had good luck with Anthem and I also have MET for dental. I am sure there are other good companies too. To lower your price you can go with a higher deductable too.

I would just get many quotes from different companies then pick the best/cheapest one. When researching health insurance you might want to try and bookmark this site for research information, news, articles, insurance quotes, companies, links and more. It should have the resources/links to help you with your question.

I would make sure you go with a financially sound health insurance company especially in this market. You can check the financial rating of insurance companies at www.ambest.com. Also check the website of your states department of insurance which has a lot of good information

Determine how much you want to spend per month

Determine the type of plan you are looking for; i.e. HMO, PPO, POS etc.

Determine the type of deductibles and co-pays you are comfortable with.

Her are a few companies you should check out. All may or may-not sell insurance in your state.

Aetna, Humana, WellChoice or any of the local Blue Cross/Blue Shield affiliates

Your question is not likely to be answered in one word.find useful tips here http://www.InsuranceFreeTip.info/insurance-for-free.htm though.

What you need to do is contact an insurance broker. An independent agent who represents several companies. This way, You can shop the entire marketplace to find the best value for YOU. I would recommend making sure you get quotes from 2 carrier for sure: Time and World. Time is the largest writer of individual medical insurance in that nation and is a MASSIVE very financially stable company. World is in the top 5 and also a great choice. Just be careful not to buy a "discount" plan or some oddball crap. Look into an HSA (health savings account) where you can put away money to cover your deductible into a tax favored savings account. You will save on your income taxes and also have the ability to save money tax deferred for retirement while at the same time LOWERING your premiums. Also, ALWAYS contact your state's commissioner of insurance and check up op the company AND the agent. Just do your homework, it's not that hard.

I personally got a great deal from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Plus they tend to be a little better about accepting claims, which could be a big deal if you run into problems down the road.

I picked them from a list put together at
http://www.playsfetch.net/msc/mysurance.html

If you do a search there it will give you a bunch of options. I would personally stay away from Humana and Aetna, cause I've heard a lot of people say they like to deny claims for no apparent reason.

you may also want to try comparison shopping online. try search on yahoo or goolgle for health insurance, and there are many that can provide some shopping comparison.
