I need life insurance but..?
I went through a 30 day inpatient drug treatment program about 10 years ago. I'm scared of that question on all insurance applications about past drug treatment. If I answer this truthfully I'm afraid they'll either refuse me or charge me alot more.

If this was ten years ago, I would not even say anything about it. Most of what they look for are presently engaged, in last 3,5 or 7 years. So you can honestly say- No to the question.

I just looked at the policy that I sell. There is no time limit. It just asks if you have ever received counseling or treatment for drugs or alcohol. So, it depends on the company.

I still would say you should not be too worried about the question, unless there is treatment that is going on now due to the drug use.

Most companies ask about the most recent 5 years. If you have nothing in your medical (or criminal) record for 5 years, you should be fine.

I hope you use your past experience as a lesson for your kids.

Go talk to a licensed agent in your area.

Congratulations on completing your drug treatment program.

Don't worry about the life insurance applications. It's best to tell the truth. All life insurance policies have a clause for Contestability Period. That means, if you die and there is a claim to pay the life insurance to your beneficiaries within the first two years of the policy being in place, the company can contest the payout. If you lied on the application, or misrespresented your answers, there is a chance the payout will not be made. So, it's important to answer the application questions truthfully.

If you want a life insurance offer that asks fewer questions, and may accept you with this history, you may want to try no medical life insurance protection. This type of coverage asks fewer questions, and they let you know within minutes if you qualify for coverage. They even let you pay online and start your policy the same day, if you qualify.

You can get a free report on this type of coverage at http://www.term-life-online.com/subscription.html

I hope that helps! Best of luck to you.

First I want to congraduate you on finishing the program, because I know it wasn't easy. As long as you have stayed clean that whole time you shouldn't have any problems. If your in illinois, I can help you. If not, go to wslife.com and find an agent near you. I know two policy that we have that could cover you. If you have any question, email me at mackelcw@yahoo.com

Insurance companies cannot charge you more than anyone else unless they charge everyone in that same group more (example: Everyone who has ever had treatment for drug use.) This could be a possibility however don't think so because the MIB (Medical information bureau) is much like the Credit Report after 7 years it drops off. With the MIB the time limit is 10 years. It's possible that your treatment information has now dropped off the radar screen. Either way it's not likely that you will be charged more since it's not a recent problem. Always answer the questions truthfully because the information may already be in the MIB and if you lie they will surely reject you. Hope this helps, I was a insurance salesman many years so Im sure of this information.

I would suggest you contact a local independent agent and ask if you could make a preliminary inquiry. This is not a formal application, but a way to gauge whether or not your are insurable and if insurable, at what level. There are insurance carriers that specialize in the non-standard market. Some of the things the agent is going to want to know: what kind of drug use (past IV drug use is more difficult to insure), age at the time (were you a college student experimenting?), any impaired driving charges or arrests, was the drug treatment voluntary or court ordered, do you attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings, any other medical conditions, etc. Be honest with your answers. There are no guarantees on a preliminary inquiry, but it will at least give you some idea as to whether or not you should proceed with a formal application.

Well, if it was over ten years ago, normally the questions are Timed based. So if it was honestly out side of the time frame they are asking about, then it's not being dishonest at all to not offer that information.

I would say get life insurance only if you have kids or a huge debt that will leave someone struggling (like a spouse). Also you can supplement what you need with insurance through work. Often the group insurance is much less "intrusive."

Also, get only TERM insurance. It's cheaper. And make sure you are SAVING money in a qualified plan like a Roth-IRA. If you got Term and Saved in a Roth-IRA you will come out WAY WAY ahead of any dollars you put into a cash value life insurance product. It's simple math, not a biased statement.

whatever you do dont buy whole life like that bozo says. he makes more money that way and the cash value stays with the company when you die. a mathematical fact. just the truth so whole life agents...tell me I'm wrong....ha you cant. and why borrow your own money?
