It depends on where you live. Dental insurance should run about $30/month and if you get a PPO dental plan you'd get network discounts AND coverage up to $1500/year...which at last count is far more benefit than $30/month would get you.
In some areas; however, it doesn't make sense. But, blanket statements are usually made (and not justified) by the uneducated.

You don't need dental insurance unless you have major dental problems. Your six month cleaning should cost $50-$75 - that's $150/year and most dental insurance costs over $200 annually. The dental coverage my company offered me was about $330 annually and it costs less than half of that for my cleanings so I denied it.
