Are you currently employed? Not self-employed, but employed by another/company. If so, you can get life insurance through your employer (sometimes they offer a basic policy for no cost to the employee). You can then get supplemental insurance coverage, up to a certain amount without a health screening.
Also, check to see if you can get a mortgage insurance that will pay off your mortgage in the event of your death. I don't know if that will require a health screening or not...

I am in the U.S. and specialize in placing coverage for people with health issues.
Look for an agent who represents multiple companies...maybe by doing a search for "life insurance for people with prostate cancer" or whatever your ailment is. Have them shop on informal basis for you to see what they can come up with.
If health problems are very severe, in the US they have guaranteed issue coverage, maybe the same is available in U.K. Good luck

I would suggest consulting a good financial adviser who can check the rates offered by a variety of companies. There are some who specialise in insurance products for 'impaired' life expectancy. You really need someone who can research it for you properly. Most will not insist on charging for this work, but can take commission from the provider from whom you eventually buy a policy. If you decide not to buy one there would be no charge. Good luck

The best thing to do is to apply through an Independent Financial Adviser as they will know the insurance company that will best suit your health issues.

You need to work with an insurance broker who specializes in hard-to-place risks. There is not any one company which handles all risks the best. Expect to answer many more questions than just do you smoke or drink - someone who knows what they are talking about will probably ask questions specific about your health that you may not know the answer to.
