missinformed | I need to health insurance but i got laid off work...? |
I understand that i need health insurance. Cuz face it, you never know when it's necessary. I've been looking for a job since I got laid off in March. Cobra turned out to be too expensive.
What are some low cost health insurances that are good? Since i'm low on cash i dont wanna throw money into a bad insurance company.
Are there any programs in California that can assist me? At least until i can find a job. |

None of the major companies will write a permanent policy on someone unemployed. The reason is they know you are probably searching for employment and will likely find a new job with benefits. It can take an insurance company 5 or 6 months to recoup the cost of issuing a policy.
You can, however, get a short term medical policy. These policies don't have all the bells and whistles but will cover you for catastrophic occurrences and they are low cost. Visit an agent that works with all the major companies in your area for assistance finding the best plan for you. There is no extra charge using an agent. |

Try this one - http://healthplans.bebto.com - I personally have their health insurance.
As I know it is the cheapest one for my family in our area.
It is affordable and has good coverage. |

I recommend a high deductible plan with low premiums. If you had a catastrophic illness or or injury, your'e covered. For the minor stuff, you'll still have money to pay for services.

If you are under 21 or have kids in the home, you might be able to get Medicaid. Otherwise, it is really tough to get a private insurance that is cheap and decent. Good luck. |

I don't know about California specifically... here in New Mexico there is a program called State Coverage Initiative that works just like Medicaid with a copay. Check to see if Cali has something similar.
My suggestion to you, if you don't have any ongoing medical issues, if you are in good health, if you are under 40, and if you just want piece of mind is: Go with a POS/PPO plan w/a high deductible but low monthly premium. You will be paying for routine things out of pocket, but it will catch you if you fall into a major crisis, like a car accident.
Also, stay away from Blue Cross Blue Shield of CA, I believe they recently changed their name to Anthem of CA, or just plain Anthem. BCBS is notorious for dropping self insured individuals when they need them the most! For instance, it may cover you in the car accident, but will figure out a way to drop you before you go to your follow up appointments or even surgery. |

Avoid miracolus, bill and Jason's answers as they're just trying to get you to enter your information into their sites so they can sell it. And if you did that you'd have 30 people knocking down your door.
If you don't have any pre-existing conditions you don't want COBRA as it'll likely be very expensive.
You can scoop up a higher deductible plan to cover the "what if's" while you're looking for a job.
Good luck,

None of 'em are better than cobra. You cut the premiums, but taking really high deductibles. |
