SadToday22 | I need to purchase private medical insurance for both myself and my husband any suggestions? |
My employer just raised the price of our health insurance to $450.00 per month for both my husband and I.....I want to see if I can get coverage somewhere else for less. Any suggestions on companies? BTW, I tried BCBS...way too expensive! |

If you do business with a local insurance agent, call and get a referral to someone who specializes in health coverage and shop around. In Ohio, Nationwide used to have a decent individual health plan. Don't fall for one of these crap companies that offer "coverage" for $59.99 a month; it's a scam.
You may find, based on where you live, that only a hand full of companies write comprehensive medical policies in a given area. In central Ohio, I only know of four, so you may find BCBS is in the ballpark for your individual situation. You're probably better off eating the increase at work. |

What are your health conditions and your ages? Also it will depend on where you live. Something your employer may want to look into (especially if they are a small to medium size company ) is a high deductable HSA ( or Medical IRA) type plan. This will help both you and the employer. The basic concept behind these is that you take on more financial responcibility for your medical coverage, but your employer can help by matching your contributions to your plan (in a way like a 401(k) plan). The plan will cover your deductable (once there is more than the required deductable in the account) plus most routine things like annual exams, PAPS, mamograms and blood work (once a year) are covered without the deductable needed.
The next step would be to get something like catestrophic medical incase something really bad happend. This can lead to huge savings for both you and your employer. Also if you don't use all the money you are contributing to the plan each year it will grow tax deferred and can then be used in retirement (where normally your medical coverage is lost from your employer and you are forced onto medicare), can be taken with you no matter where you go in professional career, and can even be used to supplement retirement income. |

OK, you're GOING to pay more than that for a private policy. BCBS isn't "way too expensive", it's really around market value.
If you want a policy to cover you both for about $200 a month, you're going to be looking a a $5,000 deductible - or higher - the insurance doesn't kick in until AFTER you've paid the first $5,000 in medical bills.
Health insurance is expensive, because just about EVERYONE puts in claims. Some claims are just higher than others. |

The key to getting a good price is competition, so try contacting an insurance broker. A broker works with several companies instead of just one and can shop for the most competitive package that fits your needs.
Since time is a factor for you, the fastest and easiest thing to do is go on line and fill out a “request a quote” form on a health insurance site such as http://www.healthinsurancewiz.com Your information will be sent to a health insurance broker in your area who has subscribed to the service, which means he or she has made an investment in helping you. The quote is free, and you are not obligated to buy. Best of all, the information you provide is kept confidential—it cannot be sold to (or shared with) other companies, although it might be provided to more than one health insurance broker. That will give you even more options! |

Depending on your age and health situation, you might be interested in a new company offering low cost individual health plans in Texas for young, reasonably healthy people. You buy into a plan at a super low cost with fixed benefits that will cover the typical activities and preventative care of a healthy person. Then, if something catastrophic happens, you have the option to get additional levels of coverage, even AFTER the event. A healthy male 25-years-old (and under) would pay under $100 a month for basic coverage. Check them out at http://www.precedent.com Even if you’re not in Texas, my understanding is that they’ll be offering plans in additional states soon. I hope you find what you need! |
