Ever buy a lottery ticket, and have it "not win"? Ever get any money back from that?

You don't get refunded if you don't use insurance - that money goes to pay off the claims for people that DID use insurance.

Insurance is like gambling. You're betting something is going to happen, the insurance company is betting it won't. You don't get your money back AFTER the game, when you lose your bet.

no you're not paying it for a piece of paper as you call it, you are buying protection in case something happens, like theft, fire, accident.

First, insurance and gambling should not be used in the same conversation since they do not follow the same priniciples.
Second if you think all you get is a few sheets of paper and an envelope for what you pay, maybe you should read what's on the paper to fully appreciate what it si you are buying.
Insurance is a pooling of resources so that members of the pool who are looking to protect something or someone can share losses amongst the members so that no one person has to shoulder the burden of a loss alone. If members of the pool demand their money back at the end of the term because they claimed nothing then there will not enough money in the pool to pay anticipated claims therefore two things will happen: 1) claims will be paid until the pool is depleted, then no further claims can be paid; 2) premiums skyrocket in order to keep the pool solvent. While insurers require members to pay more for being a higher risk, it all depends on the solvency of the pool from which they draw from to pay claims.

You don't get insurance back, thats how they make their money. they are obliged to pay for accidents that you have, possibly up to a certain price, but often in big accidents it will cost more than the 2000 you've already paid them.

By making you pay lots, they can ensure that they can definitely pay for somebody elses screwup, its how it works!

The thing you paid for was peace of mind. When you have insurance, you don't have to drive around scared to death that you're going to mess up and hit someone. You had the peace of mind in knowing that if you messed up, it's ok...because you were covered. THAT'S why people pay insurance and don't get anything back. You didn't get jipped because your company was ready and willing to pay at any time during your policy period if you would have caused an accident.

Insurance is a financial product - it's not like purchasing a pair of shoes.

You don't purchase an envelope and paper. You purchase a promise. A promise that the insurance company will pay for any damage to your property and for any liability you are responsible for (up to your policy limit). The insurance company kept their promise. They were ready to handle a claim in the event that one was filed. They honored their promise.

Some folks think of insurance like gambling -- You pay for a policy - if you don't have a claim - the insurance company keeps the money (and wins)

If you have a claim - the insurance company pays out to for the claim (and you win - if you consider having a wreck a win)

Once the lottery drawing has been had - you don't get your money back for the ticket if you number was not drawn.
