I pick up & drop off ironing so what cover of insurance do i need?
i am confussed as for 10 years i have had van insurance now i have been told i need haulage cover. i use my pannel van to pick up & deliver peoples ironing a couple of hours each evening it is around trip on avarage of 20miles so can anyone tell me what insurance cover i need

welcome news
I assume you have a commercial vehicle policy covering 'own goods or goods in trust'.

If that is the case then, providing you don't charge for the actual delivery, you do not need haulage cover.

your insurance company will not cover u van if used as 'commercial' courier/hauler
because u have non commercial insurance.

so they want u to hace commercial insurance

find out the costs from other insurances.
decide if u make enough money after labor gas to cover insurance.

if not , look for new insurance company and do NOT tell them about extra 'haulage'.

insurance to cover damages for clothes is ridiculous ripp off.

I don't think Haulage cover is what you need. I think you're looking at what's called 'Goods In Transit' policy. However, this is not my area of expertise so I would advise you to contact a local broker.

Tell your agent you are using your vehicle for business use.
It will increase your premium but you do not need to get a second policy. The insurance company just wants to make sure the premium you pay reflects the exposure they face.

You need a business auto policy written under a "service" polciy. Also, you would need a "Bailee's" policy to cover the clothing in your care. That would be a general liability policy specifically written because you are in care, custody and control of other people's property.

You may be able to get the auto and liability on the same policy. Check with your local broker to make sure.

Was it commercial auto? If so, maybe your agent can add an endorsement to it to cover you.

you need to register some business milage with your insurance. I'm the similar than you, except it's people i transport sometime and use my car to go from place to place in the community (I care for people in their own homes).
In your case, there's your clients chothes to insure, but you should have insurance for those, even at home (in case of fire...), which should cover transport of the goods.
Do not forget to declare to your house insurance that you run business from home. It may cost a bit more, but in the even anything happens, if you don't declare and insurance finds out, then you may end up with nothing as false declaration would unvalidate your insurance.

In your situation, I would go see an insurance broker and explain all. Then they should tell you all you need to know
