First call the insurance company and find out why the check was sent to you.
If it is in fact a mistake -- take the check to your insurance agent and have them return it to the appropriate person.
Once the insurance company realizes the mistake - they will pursue you to get the money back. They may even pursue legal action. There is not "finders keepers" in the financial world.
If you are not sure -- take the check and go see your agent. Find out why the money was sent to you and if it is an error or not.
EDIT: if you were to have sent the insurance company too much money in premium- they would either 1. send you a refund or 2. apply that over payment toward future premium amounts/apply it forward.
They don't get to keep it without providing the coverage for it. They can't say "sucks to be you-- you over paid us". So, you can't do it either. |

First, call them and confirm that it is a mistake. If it is a mistake, send it back! They will audit their files and ask for it (usually this happens when you least have the funds). |

If you're sure it's a mistake, then yes, of course you do. That money doesn't belong to you. Keeping it would be theft.
Are you sure you weren't entitled to a refund for some reason? Have you called the insurance company to ask them about it?

Please let me analogize. If you made a payment to the insurance company for a premium installment then through an oversight you mailed them an additional premium payment, would you expect them to refund the overpayment?
My advice to you is to call the customer service dept of your insurance company, explain the situation and ask for their advice. |
