Well first and foremost, I am only 16 years old, but i'm pretty sure if my # is stolen, then it can hurt me in the future.
So....please don't blame me for suspecting this..
I first started work yesterday @ CVS and since we do not have lockers yet, the manager just said to keep my things in the manager room. I put my bag and hoodie in there as other people did also..
Note that people come in & out of the manager room constantly...
AND YES my social security card was in my bad... BAD MISTAKE, I KNOW. "always keep your things w/ you no matter what. I know that now but i'm just a little too late..
I DO NOT remember the front of my bag being open when I placed my bag there, but it is a GOOD possibility that I i did because I make that mistake sometimes.
So after shift, I come to get my bag and the front part is open, My ss card isn't missing but it's a chance that it could have been written down.
my question is....I may be being way too paranoid, but it's for a big cause, but I need to know something that can monitor the activity which may be going on...I heard it could be some type of lock being put on your ssn but I do not know. I am only 16 so i'm not eligible for a lot of things but I still worry. It happened to my mother and it's possible it could for me too.
So does anyone know any websites or ANYTHING that can let me know when something goes on? |

Since it happened to your mom, you may be a little paranoid. That's ok you learned your lesson not to leave your stuff alone. And, DO NOT carry your social security card with you. Do not carry any personal stuff with you unless you really need to.
Just check your credit report from time to time. You can order it for free at http://www.annualcreditreport.com
The government allowed you to order your credit reports once a year for free through this website.

First off tell your boss that you think your belongings were tampered with. Then go to www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft and read all their information. If you are still worried then talk to your Mom and ask her what she did to improve her situation. And most importantly keep your SSC in your wallet, and keep it on you! |

it's true that you may be acting a little overly paranoid in this situation, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
There are web sites that allow you to monitor your credit report whenever you want for a monthly fee, and by law you are allowed to receive 1 credit report per year free (https://www.annualcreditreport.com).
are there cameras in the room where your bag was kept? Perhaps you can explain to the manager that your bag was open and are afraid that someone might have gotten to your personal information. Maybe he'll let you view the tapes to see if anyone went into your bag. |

Sweetie, you're young, if you suspect this you should talk to one of your parents immediately. Most of the time people will try to use your SSN to get a credit card, but legally you are not eligable, and that is cross referenced with you SSN. I wouldnt worry too much. I used to have my card in my purse all the time and there were so many chances for it to be stolen and it wasnt.
Also that lock thing you are talking about isnt really that effective. I heard that the guy who invented it boasted his SSN to the public and dared the to try and steal his identity, and some one was successful.
FreeCreditReport.com is a really good way to check on things with that. |
