sanjoseskater | I want life insurance but they ask the question about smoking and I have had a few cigars this last 12 months. |
They want to know if I have smoked in the last 12 months. I have, but I am not a smoker. One cigar a month does not make me a smoker, why should I get labeled as one?
How should I answer this question? |

You say, yes, I have an occasional cigar, about one a month.
Tell the truth. |

Just admit that you have a cigar on occassion (i.e. anniversary, birth of child, etc...) if you make them believe by saying "occassionally" most of the good life insurance companies (i.e. Lincoln, Jefferson Pilot, AIG) will give you non-tobacco rates. As a matter of fact, even if you are a avid cigar smoker, Lincoln will give you non-tobacco rates. As long as you don't smoke cigarettes with them, you are good. |

Prudential will give you non-smoker rates even if you test positive for nicotine as long as you declare that you only smoke cigars. As mentioned, Lincoln Financial, John Hancock, Genworth, and others will give non-smoker rates for "celebratory" smokers who can squirt a clean sample.
Long story short, you should work with an agent who actually knows something about life insurance. Good luck. |

If your life insurance company is going to give you a physical (including a blood test like mine did) then they "might" find nicotine and label you a smoker.
If it were me, I'd label myself a non-smoker and take my chances with the blood test, assuming you're telling the truth about 1 cigar a month. |

I worked for a life insurance agency. One cigar per year is considered a smoker. |

It's always better to tell the truth. Insurance companies check with samples (blood, urine, etc), to see if the answers given on the applications are truthful.
If they find some answers that are not true, they will delay your policy isue, and you might be rated a little higher (which means that you will end up paying more anyways). |

Always be truthful on a life insurance application. There is a place on the application for comments. Say yes, and explain in the comments section. Most underwriters will issue your policy on a non-smoker rate depending on the company.
Hope that helps. But ALWAYS be truthful. Your family may regret it if you lie and croak with in 2 years. |

If it's a yes or no question, say no. (They're talking about habitual smokers.)
If you have space to go into detail, provide the details you gave here. |

You should be honest. Whether you want to admit it or not, you are considered a smoker. I once had a client who smoked one cigarette a day and qualified for the smoker rate. If you lie and you die during the first two years, they can deny the claim based on false information on the application. |

Honestly..answer the question honestly.
Most life insurers will require a blood or urine test and they will SEE if you have nicotine in your sample. If you say 1 cigar a month and you're positive for heavy nicotine they'll know you smoke more than you say, if it's negative they'll know your truthful.
How they deal with your situation will depend on the underwriting rules of the company. Some give preferred non-smoker rates for occasional cigars smokers others will automatically give you smoker rates. You agent should know the answer, if not a quick call to the underwriter will clear it up. Don't like the answer, find another life company; there are only a thousand or so in the US.
Either way, try not to smoke any cigars for two-three weeks before your pee test.
Now the flip side of not telling the truth: Cigars DO cause health problems, even for light smokers. You die because of this during the contestability period, you get no coverage. |

Oh, my god! You are uninsurable! You are doomed, doomed I say!
Just say you are a non-smoker, for Petes sake! |
