There isn't anything illegal about stopping a direct withdrawal from your checking count to pay a bill. Simply contact the bank to stop the automatic payment but make sure you make the payments yourself. |

You cancel by writing to insurance company to inform them and then cancel in bank as normal. From this moment your insurance for your car in not valid.
It is a simple civil contract and of no interest to the police what so ever - unless of course you continue to drive and you do not have any insurance cover. Then it is a straight case of having no insurance unless you try to con them into believing your old policy is still valid when it gets a bit more serious. |

To cancel the direct debit is easy just call them and cancel it. Police will only get involved if you have committed an offence Your problem comes with driving your car. It is an offence to drive your car while it is uninsured, it should have valid MOT,Tax & Insurance and you should have a licence to drive the vehicle.
Inform the DVLA when you car is off the road. Do not do anything illegal it's just not worth it. |

Upon taking out the insurance, you would have signed a contract to say you will pay "£X" premium.
Most Insurance companies work on a sliding scale, for instance if you opt out one month through, you will have to pay 11 months worth of premium to cancel the contract with an additional £25 admin charge etc.
Like all credit arrangements, if you were to cancel at your bank, the Insurance company could resubmit the direct debit under a different bankers code and still obtain money from your bank. This will not only result in them getting their money, but more often that not you will have to pay a charge to the bank for this service. It will sting you! In addition will damage your credit rating which you dont want to be doing in the current climate!
You may be better of letting the insurance pass 6 months, and then look to cancel as some do not request an opt out penalty after this period.
Just because you have you car insured with one company, does not mean to say that you cannot have it insured elsewhere (Dual Insurance), this is not illegal but in most cases not economically viable hence it is not common.
Once you cancel the contract, GOOD insurance companies will request the Certificate of Insurance back that was issued to you. Should the vehicle be in an accident after cancellation, if Insurance companies have this Certificate it gets them out of any liability, hence they don’t put their hands in their pockets.
Just make sure you have a Insurance whatever you decide to do, otherwise you could face criminal prosecution.

There is no problem cancelling the direct debit - return your cert and disc to your insurers advising that's what you want to do and call your bank for them to stop it from their side. That's assuming you want to cancel your policy....if you want to pay the balance just send in the payment once you have called them to see what it is. If you are cancelling the policy make sure you return your cert and disc or alternatively sign a lost cert declaration as when the policy is cancelled the insurers will have to notify the department of the environment - the guards would have access to the system and if your stopped its very easy for them to find out if your not insured.
Finally if you do cancel - depending on what stage or what payments you have made to date - you may end up owing the insurers Time on Risk charge - make sure to check this out as if you ever need your no claims bonus they wont release it without the payment |
