abbazoodafish | I want to spend a year traveling and have questions about health insurance? |
I currently have health insurance with my employer but I am considering taking a year off to travel around the world a bit. If I get my own health insurance coverage, and I don't allow it to lapse before I get it, will I have trouble getting pre-existing conditions treated in the future when I rejoin an employer?
I don't have any major health issues -- mostly some tendonitis that has required repeat physical therapy -- not even sure if this would count as a pre-existing condition. |

No, you shouldn't have any trouble, as long as it's with a group policy, and you don't let your current policy lapse.
Check with your current policy, though, because likely you're NOT going to have "worldwide" coverage. |

Your current insurance may not work out side of your home country. You should consider buying a Travel Medical Policy which can protect you from any medical and accidental issues.

Don't take any chances. Contact a travel insurance company that provides health insurance outside the U.S. Get additional information from them, and a price. |

world insurance used to offer global coverage for travelers. most individual companies only go up to 2 - 3 months for overseas & canada. in florida, pre-ex depends on group or individual (indv you'll have pre-ex unless cobra exhausted, group more options). call a local health ins agent or try world ins . com. tendonitis has alot of meanings so applying for indv coverage, depending on U.S. state, could get tricky. |

Physical therapy would be considered a pre-existing condition.
Each state has different rules, but it is likely that once you obtain group insurance again, that insuror will cover your pre-existing conditions with no waiting periods due to the fact that you will be able to show proof of continuous coverage, (your individual plan.) There are several other factors that may come into play, and this should be discussed with an agent in your state.
The suggestion would be to call a Blue Cross broker in your state and pose this question. |
