Most hospitals will work with you on a payment plan if you call them. If you really have no income, they will have no choice but to write it off as charity. |

Go to the hospital or call the billing department- ask them for a payment plan and ask what options are available. Some times they give you a sizeable discount for prompt and regular payments. They may have some help specifically for college students - ask them. |

I would do the following:
1. Call the Hospital to arrange billing arrangements.
- Generally speaking, they will not put you in collections if you pay something.
2. Get a job for two reasons.
- Pay the hospital bill
- Pay an insurance premium.
The key to this sitaution is learning your lesson. You never should be uninsured. Chickering and some other carriers specialize in college healthplans. They are cheap and go a long way when an unpredictable medical cost pops up.
Once again, don't place a band aide on a bleeding wound. Fix the root cause problem so it does not cause a future interuption. |

Contact the hospital and ask to work out an extended repayment schedule. Its better to be proactive than just fall behind and have them send it to a collection agency. Then you're damaging your credit history. |

Get a job. Even part time on weekends. That's how you pay off the bill.
There's no "welfare" for health issues after the fact; and if you WOULD need the welfare insurance, you and your parents have to qualify by being low income. |

You stay in school, but also get a job, no matter how menial, and start paying off the hospital. Each day you go into the job, you thank God you are still alive and that the EMS and hospital staff took such good care of you, in spite of your foolish, selfish, self-destructive choices (underage drinking to the point of collapse and alcohol poisoning, as you now know, has far reaching consequences). |

If you have insurance and the insurance paid their portion of the claim, then all you can do is call the hospital and ask for a payment plan - explaining to them that you are a full time student who is otherwise unemployed. They *might* discount it for you, or write off your portion, since it will cost them more to send you to collections. HOWEVER, they might not - because by discounting or waiving a patient's portion of the charges that the insurance has determined are the patient's responsibility - they violate their contract with the insurance, and if it's a big enough plan, they don't want to do that. (Because then the insurance can sue them or fine them, or just drop them.) |
